Well done smf! Wildbird managed to digitally blank out one of the "Clear" stations. I specially arranged for them to put out SI and not Emit because I just knew the latter would provoke outrage/admiration (delete as appropriate)

Re: Moray 2013
Great video and my entry is already in the bag. My own first impressions of the golf segment were that it is just introducing things that other people can do when they are not orienteering and not an attempt to p@ss off golfers.
Maybe we should have gone even further and built on the current publicity of (You've Been) Trump(ed)'s golf course and include an orienteer running across pristine dunes in Balmedie with an old copy of the map capturing the look of horror when he noticed diggers and piles of Earth rather than spurs and reentrants...

Meat Market - We're up there tomorrow night for DNC, shame I don't have a camera capable of filming in the dark!

Re: Moray 2013
The video is generally ok but nothing spectacular
I'm not a fan of the free running stuff, it's just not representative of the sport. Their first video was fun but to use it again...
My major gripe is the complete lack of trying to keep the camera still. It's unwatchable in places as the camera flies about all over the place. It's all well and good strapping a camera to someone's head to analyse their run / show what it's really like, but for a promo video it really needs to be as still as possible. EOC '12 did a fantastic job of this when they had someone follow the planner around, their job as cameraman was to keep their head as still as possible while running around, looked great.

Of course - all good learning experiences but if you don't try things you will never know. I was surprised how stable the aerial shots were. Lots of non-orienteers I have spoken to really like the free running element and like the pace of the whole thing (but not everyone does). If we do a WOC 2015 video what would you like to see?

Re: Moray 2013
Personal opinion: the best three orienteering videos I've seen are
That EOC One with the Octocopter
That Polish One
That Austrian One
The one thing all three have in common is high production values: sharp HD footage, well-edited. The last of these is not dissimilar to Forest Jump in terms of "plot", and looks as if it uses stabilised headcam footage.
Of course, I'm not sure how effective any of these would be as marketing materials, rather than just being fun things for existing orienteers to watch.

In terms of advertising actual events, The Latvian One and The Other Latvian One are pretty good.

Re: Moray 2013
We had a very short timescale from actually receiving confirmation of funding to getting go-live of the film at the time of entries. Go Pro was pretty new to Wildbird (they have other "proper" cameras) so this was really the first time it had been tried. I suspect from what I have read some of the others had experimented a bit more with Go Pro. As part of the "reward" for giving up their time and using up their energy we are intending to loan a Go Pro to Johnstone and Harry on a long term basis. We will have access and use of the Go Pro in the SOA when we want it - maybe we can learn more about how best to use it include image stabilisation. The new Go Pro has wi-fi but I don't know if it can stream live or only be used to control it remotely.

Are you trying to promote the Six Day to non-orienteers?

Re: Moray 2013
There are a lot of local businesses who have an interest in the event, and Sunlit Forres has been working hard at promotion. Though the video was aimed primarily at orienteers I also wanted it to raise the profile of the event/sport more generally. Locally and nationally e.g. through EventScotland

I believe that one of the criticisms of the 6 day historically is its lack of local involvement. What could be a showcase event, essentially is a smash and grab visit to an area with little if any local involvement in the sport. I believe SF has plans afoot to change that...

Re: Moray 2013
With 300 Gb of footage to play with we can maybe have an alternative version taking out the jumpy bits and the wobbly cam? Anyone fancy a sample of raw footage for stabilising or does this have to be planned in at the running around stage?
Jimmy was up in his microlight again at the weekend and sent the above shot - I want to use him for WOC!

Re: Moray 2013
If you're looking to advertise events to orienteers (rather than the concept of orienteering to non-orienteering), I think having real action footage from previous events is a big plus - see those Latvian videos I posted above. Obviously not something that would have been possible this time round, but getting good footage for use in 2015 trailers should be one of the aims for the filmcrew at Euromeeting 2013.
It's probably worth coming up with some ideas now of what sort of footage you might want and discussing it with whoever is doing the Euromeeting 2013 filming, as what you want for 2015 trailers probably won't be the same as what you'll want for the live big screen broadcasts at Euromeeting itself.

You can stabilise footage afterwards, but it'll never be as good as stable raw footage. I use the DeShaker filter in VirtualDub which works quite well.
If you look at the films Scott linked to, most of the footage isn't captured by someone running with a camera. It's either a still or panning camera tracking someone through the forest, or it's from an Octocopter.
Another trick with a GoPro is to shoot at 60FPS, and then slow it down to 40% or 50% in post production. The Latvian ones used slowmo to good effect.
