Re: New SI cards
Can I just ask a dumb question, what is the point of the SI card flashing, when the unit beeps and flashes anyway? Aren't you just likely to get confused with all the action going on..?

You can check you successfully punched while running away from the control (i.e. the same functionality that the EMIT cards with scrolling displays offered). I occasionally punch, and then a few seconds later think to myself "did I really hear that beep?". If it matters enough, I then go back and punch again, but that wastes 5-10 seconds.

You must be very old indeed, King Penguin, if your date of birth is only seven digits long.

Re: New SI cards
As it happens my SI 6 card and my wife's SI 6 card (am I glad we got them both fast and apparently compatible with all boxes) both carry versions of our birthdates -last two digits of the year first and it is so easy to remember kedge that you'll be happy you did the same thing (they're also personalised to the colours we normally run in)
Possibly the slowest Orienteer in the NE but maybe above average at 114kg

We've had this discussion before, that faq (link : faq.php#f1r2 ) says to try setting both timezone and daylight savings settings before contacting an admin. I've made sure both are correct and it's fine for me.

When I got my SI card with 6 digits I was able to choose a number which was my birthday - luckily for me, both the day and month are single digits leaving 4 for the year.

The beep has two disadvantages. 1) not everybody can hear it, 2) if there are multiple control units, it may be caused by someone punching the other one.
The light on the unit would be fine if people would only stop sticking labels over them!
But far easier to have a signal on your personal card which is still visible as you move away from the punch unit - SI have picked up on EMIT's best idea, just after EMIT have dropped it!

Re: New SI cards
What colour is the flashing light? Us colourblind folk may well not be able to see a red light flashing. Someone told me the other day that SI control units flash - I've never actually noticed!! Luckily I can still hear the beep. Lets hope SI have got it right this time.
To oblivion and beyond....

Re: New SI cards
I'm only very slightly colour blind but surely it doesn't matter what colour the light is; you are perceiving a change in light intensity not a change of colour. So when we watched black and white TV we could still tell if a light was flashing on screen whatever the true colour was -it was a lighter grey than previously.
