Few orienteers have their own brick. Everyone else has to pay extra to hire one adding to the cost of entry, travel & accommodation. Some people are on low/no incomes. It all adds up.

So which bit of your travel and accommodation is increased in price because you don't have a brikke? If it's this much of an issue I'm surprised you don't already have one.

SCOA are an EMIT region -- i.e. the clubs in that region all have/use EMIT.

SN use SI so not all clubs in the SCOA region use EMIT.

Or perhaps SN are not in the SCOA region, as "BOC 2013 is an SE event" as Mikey wrote.

SN are in both SCOA and SEOA as they draw members from both Hampshire (SC)
and Surrey (SE) amongst other counties (and countries ).
SN got their original SI kit before SCOA went Emit.

BOC2013 is definitely using SI

They are charging extra to use EMIT at £1 per participant per day.

Juniors get free hire of EMIT brikkes, so that is a welcome saving for families. As I am the only one from my family who has an EMIT brikke, we are only having to pay £3 for my husband to hire one for the 3 individual days. The EMIT hire for the relay day also appears to be included in the price. I think that this is reasonable.

Dave - of course the hire of EMIT does not affect the other costs. Don't be so literal!
It is an extra cost that has to be added to the total.

Hopefully the parking fees will be part of the entry costs. And, is the JK really charging £1/day for EMIT hire? I thought is was a one-off fee.

Does anyone have a breakdown of BOF members owning an EMIT brick and those owning a SI SI Card? I am assuming that SI is far greater, but I could be wrong.

While the region concerned has all the EMIT equipment to be used for level B and below events I don't think it should be allowed for level A events (for the reasons given earlier).

I dont like emit either but I dont think its a valid argument to say some people will have an advantage. You could have said the same about SI when it came in so how would you ever make progress. In fact that argument now works in reverse as I found out the last time I tried to use a pin punch at an event

If you think it's an advantage then go and get some EMIT kit and practice. If you're not prepared to do that, don't complain.

Any potential advantage is pretty much nullified because the control units are rarely positioned correctly

Anyone who grew up with Blue Peter could knock off a replica EMIT brikke and unit from cardboard, pipecleaners and knicker elastic in about 30 minutes for minimal cost. For a bit extra some sticky back plastic would make it look more realistic.

Yes. About 7000 SI cards, and about 1000 Emit bricks.

They might have an advantage, but certainly not 5 seconds per control. If it matters enough to you, then buy a brick and practice. But alternatively talk to people who know how to use EMIT quickly, and then do what they do.

The majority use SI, so for a major international event please lets use SI; and have one system as standard.
If some have 'old' emit bricks, and some use new touchless ones which are quicker - surely they have an advantage?

In Barcelona, some competitors, possibly on beginners courses had what loked like Half-sized credit card type devices, which were just placed on top of an SI block - anyone know what these are?

If you were genuinely concerned about competitiveness you absolutely would. Do you think the GB team rocked up to WOC in Norway a few years ago without practicing? Don't think so.

Your attitude suggests you don't really care too much about your result but are just there for the enjoyment of orienteering, so do just that and don't worry about the few seconds you might lose

Almost everyone who has Emit also has SI (sorry, I don't have the figure, but just skimming through the list I can't immediately see anyone with only Emit).

Exactly right Andy - perhaps a semi-relevant example, I think it was the young Olav Lundanes practicing for JWOC who saw that the area had lots of fences and, therefore, had his dad build some fences in the back garden to practice jumping over them to save seconds - and who won JWOC that year?
If you watch someone like srollins punch with EMIT you will see she takes no longer than the rest of us do with SI and I suspect that probably didn't happen without practice.......
I am sure if you ask him very nicely that Allan has a duff unit and dead card you can have to sharpen your skills, might be worth asking if you feel significantly disadvantaged.
