Good luck to all running in the OMM in the Howgills, starting at Sedbergh. Cold night for those camping on Friday, clear Saturday and then tipping it down through Saturday night and all Sunday. At least not as Howling as the last time (was it really 14 years ago?).
Can anyone touch Jonny Crickmore and Peter Bray on the B Course?

Re: OMM 2012
I intend to have a go at them but we'll see what happens.
Jonny does have a 100% record to defend!
a bit of a preview I did.

ba-ba commented Tom Fellbaum has dropped out. Pleased to say lewis Taylor found a partner, picking them up soon.
Get well soon Tom. Bet your bed is nicer than ours tomorrow night.

Re: OMM 2012
After racking up a dozen KIMMs/OMMs over the years, starting in 1998 in the Howling Howgills, it feels a bit strange sitting in the warmth and comfort of home as this year's batch head off. Maybe I have too many KIMM stickers across the back of the car to fit another one on, maybe it is the hamstring injury sustained last year and never fully recovered, maybe it's my original partner working out in Germany, maybe it is the higher entry fees but there wasn't quite the same motivation this year. Hopefully my son Rory running the Short Score as my proxy will ease my conscience a bit.
It is white with snow outside this morning in Morpeth - I'll still get some exercise in with the first of the Night Owls. Night Ski-O anyone?

Re: OMM 2012
Duncan and Shane won the Elite second day, but only by a minute from the leaders who had a 10 minute lead after day 1, so finished 2nd.

And it looks like orienteers won each of A, B, C, D and the Medium Score

Re: OMM 2012
It does not surprise me that orienteers feature so strongly in the results and congratulations to all of them. There was some difficult and tricky navigation especially in the Eastern part of the area and those without orienteering skills struggled. It should be a great marketing opportunity for orienteering. Possibly a flyer to be included in the next OMM mailing - join an orienteering club and improve your OMM time - no more walking round in circles - find your control not the ones on the other courses.

Split times for the elite look interesting with the top positions actualy changing during the day. Clearly a story to be told.

John was struggling due to the effects of long hours and lack of training working as a Junior Doctor in Aberdeen.

We started 10 mins down in the chase on day 2. The splits show we got 5 mins back on control #2 (I speculate the leaders maybe had a small miss here). Then we got another 13 minutes on the long leg to #6. After much deliberation we'd decided to go pretty straight (see our route on RouteGadget), they took a line to the north, and said afterwards the going was "a bit soft", plus it is somewhat longer, and you still have a few climbs. At #6 we had no idea of the standings, no-one in sight, but the marshall at #8 confirmed we were in the lead (and presumably also told them how far back they were when they arrived...). They caught up and came past us over the Calf on the way to #9, and they were going like a train, looking really strong. I couldn't keep that pace after two days of racing, Shane was seeming a bit livlier at this point, but I still think we'd have struggled to hold out to the end. So it was gutting to get into the lead and then lose it, but at the same time I do think they were the strongest pair at the weekend.
Did I hear correctly at the prize-giving that OMM 2013 will be in North Wales? Did they specifically say Snowdonia, or am I making that up? (Alternative would be e.g. Rhinogs)

Re: OMM 2012
Next year's top tips seem to be Rhinogs or Southern Snowdonia (Ffestiniog).
Rhinogs was used in 1979 - very wild and rough underfoot (broken rocks and heather), very few paths. The opposite in runnability to the Howgills.
Ffestiniog was in 1987. More familiar terrain, big mountains and a good area if land permissions can be obtained.

Re: OMM 2012
All courses now available on the OMM RouteGadget.
Apologies for the delay in getting the Day 2 Score courses up but there was a problem with the splits and the last control (BL) and it's only just been fixed.
