Just got back from Carlisle -an interesting race even if I made a major horlicks of it. Thanks to BL for the effort and I think they (possibly thanks to the CSC Final and not the NE Score Champs) had a good turnout.
My only real negative was when I strayed into an OOB car park and turned to leave immediately I realised only to hear the attendant tell me "The others went through that hole in the fence over there" effectively cutting several hundred metres off the leg!

Carlisle City Race
Possibly the slowest Orienteer in the NE but maybe above average at 114kg

There were more people going through that car park than round it.
The MOpen course was far too easy for my liking, too much dead running for a not-so-fast runner to do well.

Re: Carlisle City Race
I thought the planning was good (course B), given the constraints of the area.
Not sure why it was necessary to make that small car park OOB. The larger, busier, Sands centre car park was in bounds but more hazardous.

Re: Carlisle City Race
Another day, another excellent event. Good planning made the best and safest use of a tight area. And thanks for the Micro-O too. One quibble: I'm sad to see that a couple of runners were disqualified for not punching at the map exchange. I think they should be reinstated.

I may be misinterpreting you,Martin, but you're not condoning the people crossing the OOB because the car park was safer to cross than the Sands one?
One really salient point is that the fence they crossed via the hole is marked as uncrossable; in itself a DSQ offence which has been discussed to death here. I also don't know if the landowner had specifically refused permission- a potentially huge can of worms.

Nicely put AndyC - it doesn't matter WHY it is marked as OOB - it, is, so don't do it!!! Without knowing the reasons, you could potentially lose an area's permissions for either a good number of years, or forever - this has happened in the past.

Also, why should you NOT be DSQed for not punching the map exchange???? It's not rocket science - it's a control - punch it....

Having done this before (well, a drinks station but similar) it's really really awful, but I think they MUST be DSQed. Live and learn...

I wouldnt have raken that from what Martin said. He's an experienced Urban orienteer - probably looking at the map/ on the ground its not been that clear why its OOB. Agree it would be interesting to know why, but if its OOB as you say its clear you should stay out - in fact it doesnt matter if the boundary is mapped as uncrossable or not in those circumstances.
Orienteering - its no walk in the park

It was a question of permissions rather than a planner's decision.

Re: Carlisle City Race
I was questioning why the small car park was OOB. My guess was that it was considered hazardous due to traffic entering and leaving, and hence my reference to the Sands Centre car park, which was equally hazardous (or not, depending on your view). If it was actually a permissions issue, then fine.
I was not suggesting that running through the small car park was ok - clearly it is OOB so anyone doing so could/should be disqualified. (And I don't know which fence is being discussed, but that wasn't the point).

Are Spookster and the two Andys are talking about different OOB carparks?

having re-read what AndyC wrote, quite possibly, I'm talking about the one near the near the start/finish.
