Can someone please enlighten me as to why the SHI's are the same weekend as the City race (UK's biggest stand-alone urban race)and the Southern Champs?
When the week before its the CSC Final, so if your in both then you have two big weeks of travelling back to back or you let down your country or club and just do 1.
and (apart from the Mountain Trial, not Orienteering though per se) - there's no big events (as far as I can see) the week before.
I know the calendar is getting busier all the time but surely with events which BOF seem to dictate the dates to there need not be a such a clash.
Just seems crazy to me?

Re: Scheduling of events
Apart from the Caddihoe chase weekend and the Dee Regional event you mean?
I'd guess the answer might be somewhere along the lines of the SHI only involves a very small number of people so clashes with other lesser events arent considered that crucial.

Maybe because 3 out of 4 SHI teams would not be eligible for the Southern Champs and only 1/3 of the other (assuming the English team is equally split between North/Midlands/South) would be?

Week after actually, don't arrive early or you will have to travel three times!

The London City Race/Southern Champs (which are not BOF events) are a week later than in 2009, 2010 & 2011. May be they could advise on why a clash.
Where are the Southern Champs, as the event is TBC on the BOF fixture list?

Who decides the date of the SHIs - I don't think BOF does.

I refer to a previous post of mine to remind you that I'm planning the NE Score Champs on the same day as the CSC final (Level C) less than 50 miles away. CSC is a nominally closed event so the rules about it clashing don't apply
Possibly the slowest Orienteer in the NE but maybe above average at 114kg

Andy, CSC is a level A event! What would have happened if NE clubs were in the final, as the NE Score Champs were registered well before the regional rounds?

Re: Scheduling of events
Well I know where I'm going and it's not way up north
These home internationals are so low key most of the time, wouldn't it have been an idea to change the host rota and have the SHI at the Southern Champs with a bit of razamatazz and spectator support, with the relays on the Saturday (morning for those who would like to run London or even Saturday night as TBH the whole affair is a 2 horse race).

Re: Scheduling of events
If you think I am trekking all the way south just because some English whiners have no sense of national pride you can get lost! Tempting though the southern champs are in the glorious Epping forest (that was sarcasm btw), I'd much rather give the razzmatazz a miss and run in a technically challenging area. I'd have thought those good enough to get picked for the English team would feel likewise, and if they don't it's only once every four years!!! Will the selected English team rise to the challenge of proper orienteering? I very, very much doubt it!

Re: Scheduling of events
Would you be saying that if the SHIS were down South and clashed with the Scottish Champs?
Seriously though, would it not make sense to have the SHIs on the Saturday of the weekend with the CSC Final?

I believe the Saturday has the Carlisle Urban Race
Possibly the slowest Orienteer in the NE but maybe above average at 114kg

I think Epping East/South East is one of the best areas in England outside the Lake District. Certainly one of the best (one of very few really large) areas of ancient woodland.
Looking forward to the new LIDAR plotted contours

Housewife, I can confirm you are pretty much correct. Only 7 of the original 18 English selections have accepted their selection. Notably this includes 5 of 6 M/W20s and only 2 of 12 M/W21s.

I don't think the clash with London/Southern Champs has much to do with it though.
I doubt Scotland have had the same refusal rate (and this won't be anything to do with the home venue either). Perhaps a separate debate about English v Scottish patriotism would be interesting?
