The Aussies have been using domestiques for years and didn't draft-legal triathlon come in in the 1990s before the 2000 Olympics - it might be new to us in UK but.......

The point in my earlier post was that the athlete concerned was described as comfortably ahead of other opponents in the individual standings, though behind the Brownlees, who are clear medal prospects, but felt that he had lost out by trying to prove he was good across the whole of the race instead of ignoring the running part and training only for swim/bike stages as a domestique.

I found it a strange concept (still do) but I do recognise that it happens in other sports (road cycling). I don't follow tri so wasn't aware that it was used there and perhaps naively thought that everyone was trying to win

I have seen what may have been unofficial pack tactics with Kenyan middle distance runners - but that is perhaps more because they are so good that more of them tend to get into finals than that they are actually working for a pre-determined "winner". It may simply be a case of the strongest man left at the end...
