Junior Inter Regionals

For the children concerned the more that we can involve in inter-regional competitions the better. So let's leave well alone.

As a first-timer to JIRC I agree with Clive. My son was in one of the lower-placed squads but still had a fantastic time. The experience was tremedous. Team spirit was great. And he could finally put faces to names of his age-class competitors.
I think it was a valuable experience for him and may spur him on to greater things
As a parent, I wasn't expecting to enjoy the weekend as us adults don't get a run. But I was surprised to find I had a great time and got wrapped up in the excitment of the days.

I agree with HarryO. We were also first timers, son loved the experience despite being out for ages in the very high bracken (some of the first small 'uns out had some difficulty not being able to see over it), the being part of the team, making and renewing friendships which have started at other A events etc was all part of the weekend fun.

I estimate the SCOA region has a population of 4 million, so not much less than Scotland, perhaps a lot of our potential runners play cricket instead?

So impressed with Scottish Junior Orienteering Squad having secured £15,000 commercial sponsorship from Apache Corporation. Shows what can be done.

Regional squads exist for more reasons than competing at JIRCS. It's about growing up in the sport, regular training weekends, access to good coaches, socialising, abroad tours etc. This works well as people don't have to travel far to access it all.
The regions work fine as they are.
