Ed's Half Marathon

You may remember ShUOC's record breaking successive summiting of Everest about 18 months ago. They were inspired to make the effort to raise funds for a cancer charity which was supporting their friend Ed who was suffering from Lymphoma.

Sadly Ed didn't make it, and on the day he died his sister ran the Sheffield Half Marathon to raise money for cancer charities. Now, a year later, a bunch of Ed's friends including Young Neville, Ingrid F. and Ba-Ba are running again in memory of Ed and to raise more fund for Lymphoma Research so if you felt inclined to support them then here's a link

In addition to Neville, Ingrid, and Ba-ba. Many ShUOC members are also running and also raising money for charity.

Some say Usain Bolt's world record that stands at 9.58 is the most impressive feat in athletics history but the members of Sheffield University Orienteering Club (ShUOC) like to push the boundaries of human endevour beyond that previously thought possible.

This year we will attempt to go where no camel has gone before and break the world record for the fastest two person pantomime fancy dress costume to ever run a half marathon in the 4 billion year history of planet earth.

We hope to have a fleet of camels and other exotic animals on the start line - recent reports suggest a lion will be in attendence.

Our efforts will be focussed on raising money for Leukamia and Lymphoma research and Unicef.

Just to reassure anyone who gets as far as watching the video in the gallery that no fan heaters were harmed in it's making, and in fact the packet of pasta the was used as the stunt double was swept up and eaten at the post production party. I can't watch it myself any more because I know Ed says at the end"....and they all lived happily after"

Two hours 9 mins should be no problem. I predict a "sub-2 camel".

Just like to say a big hats off to the elder Miss H who has stepped up to the mark to take the place of Young Neville's young lady who has badly hurt her ankle. Miss H "doesn't do training" so it's pretty much going to be from a standing start - but just to make sure she didn't embarrass herself in public Mr H took her out for a tow path run yesterday - 10 miles later it's not hard to tell who was in better shape but I guess being 21 and 7 1/4 stone is a good place to make a standing start from

It's going to be warm under the camel suits on Sunday, glad I'm not wearing one (I have pledged an extra £5 if Treb ends up in hospital).

We had a test run in the costumes this evening and it was much harder than we'd anticipated to run a decent pace in the heat, but as long as we can keep drinking your extra Fiver should be safe nic.

It was a hot day to be running round in camel costumes, but they smashed the record!

1:40 for Dr. Rocke and Mr. Schorah, ~28mins sliced off the World Record. Treb and Daverams were in in about 1:52. A very warm day but excellent atmosphere, especially on Eccleshall road.

It'll be a cold day in hell before I manage to be 20mins ahead of those 2 again, although on this occasion I am willing to waive the usual punishment meted out to those ShUOC members beaten by me.

Oi! Oi! what about the non-SYO supporters who drove for hours through the heat and made a banner. The Camel was/were awesome. Well done everyone. Particularly proud of Miss H for smiling the whole way round - a little over 2hours with three weeks' notice and only a couple of long runs to practise Ed's parents were in the stadium - they seem to enjoy the occasion as much as it might be possible to do.
