Re: CompassSport editorial
I would have thought most people would find questioning somebody's gender on the basis of a photograph, even in jest, as offensive.

"Looking at the photo, you might think she had failed a gender test but it is not what you think it is."
"The photo of her on the run in shows her not wearing a watch but I can guess where it might be"

Anyway - moving on (I see Red Adder is complaining of insect bites in another thread - I think Martina could advise him on embarrassing bumps
) anyone else thought John Collis' article controversial? (well I've already had one very interesting pm that suggests I'm not the only one)

What do you think is controversial about it?
It reads as a fairly open and honest opinion (having spoken to him about it during the JK)

Re: CompassSport editorial
A "partnership agreement" driven by accountants and imposed by the masters who then turn out to be incapable of delivering their side of the deal...sounds like some government departments i could mention

.....and it also sounds quite controversial - which does not preclude it being open and honest at the same time. An opinion is always open to debate and thereby - if it is interesting enough - sure to be controversial

But it would be interesting to hear what other people think!
It may well be that John did a fantastic job of screening us peons from the Botherdom, but I wasn't aware of any interference from BOF.
I did start by sending a letter to BOF telling them what I was assuming they'd be unable to deliver, which they agreed to and respected. Never heard any more from anyone, except Dave Peel from whom I got a lot of good advice about mapping and planning.

Re: CompassSport editorial
From the competitors point of view the partnership worked well enough and I developed a good working relationship with Dave Peel (just as well as we are delivering WOC2015 together). Lack of space in Focus means that everything I wrote in my article about the JK will not be published. It would be unprofessional of the Professional Officer to say any more.

Re: CompassSport editorial
I agree with Nick's first editorial. I have been saying such for years.
Am I right in saying that the BOF website front page video gives more seconds to urban orienteering than to r****l (dirty word) orienteering. Yes I am..... 31 secs compared to 16 and some of those 16 are park orienteering.
John Colls made what seems to be a valid point.
Do we need more regional power and less BOF power in orienteering?
I also agree with Red Adder. I took the questionable gender remark at face value. It is a touchy subject even when treated seriously and really not one to be joked about.
It is easy to think that everyone will see your hidden meaning when joking in that way.

I thought that on the whole the urban section was good. Where it was weak was in the 'rural' and the 'walk' sections. The 'rural'* section was both completely misnamed (sounds far too cosy and is just not used), and badly portrayed, especially in terms of the kit (barely a decent bit of O-kit in sight). As for the 'walk' section - what were British Orienteering thinking of? You're trying to project a vibrant, vital adventure sport and you spoil it in the blink of an eye. Personally, I'd have focused on the range from local to national and international, emphasising the aspirational, not the mediocre.
*So what do we call more conventional orienteering - 'forest' (so what about open terrain?), -'terrain'? -''wild' ?
PS - I agree with Nick too!

It may have to be 'non-urban'

Having read A few Spare Maps the word that comes to mind is "predictable". I get the feeling that the real issue he has with BOF is the "B".
