The reason it doesn't look very urban is a) because that's how the Dales do urban and b) I was manning a gate stopping escaping sheep!

Totally agree Wendles - a brilliant event. Great course with loads of variety, route choice, and quick fire navigation round the school - lots of potential for mistakes and much discussion afterwards! With the sunshine, setting etc., loved it. Thank you all! (Giggleswick School would make a really good sprint area).

Good event - mixture of Fell, School Grounds and Urban with Route Choice problems and quick-fire decision making required at the start and finish (caught me out!).

The main thing that caught me out was the overprint uncrossable wall above the school. I did not expect that on an ISSOM map and must have mentally blanked it out. Wasted 5 mins trying to make sense of the wrong area and trying to match the black wall on the map (between 6/7 on A) with the one facing me on the ground (between 5 and 6), which just did not fit. Apart from that, an excellent event.

It's interesting how bits of countryside at 1:5000 can be so confusing when slipped into an otherwise-urban race. It seems very hard to get the brain to adjust to the scale.

Amazing how many people made the same mistake. The map is totally clear but during the race lots of people just tuned out the the uncrossable boundary line - myself included. I think maybe because on the earlier legs there were lots of over-crossing purple lines that you could just ignore, your brain just treated this one the same way, despite the fact that it is much thicker than all the others.

Me too: running up towards the wall mentally muttering to myself "Where on earth is that on the map?" The scales only fell from my eyes in the last 20m or so. It was a long way round!
