The bridge in question is the Porthill Bridge which was opened in 1922 and replaced a ferry between the Boat House pub and the Quarry (home of Shrewsbury Flower Show). The crossing is going to be run as a joint venture between the Council and the local cruise boat company.
The original suggestion of using the ferry was for the Junior courses to avoid going anywhere near any roads but I would think that older competitors would enjoy the novelty too.
