I guess it does, but IOF rules and BOF rules insist on it! Makes a step up from our usual "real events" in great forests with challenging courses

TheJK relay RouteGadget is now available.
There was a problem with control 181 that affected 45 people, so their split time had to be manually inserted for it. I've added 1 minute to the previous control split.
Relays are nearly always a challenge for RG as there are many ways that the planner can create the gaffling in the course files, but the failed control just added another issue.

Back to timed vs punching starts.
I agree there's not much point to timed starts.
Punching starts doesn't mean starting whenever you fancy. You still have allocated times but when you're off you punch just to make sure. So start officials can still stop people taking the mickey by starting at a random time.

As far as I could tell no one ever checked whether the right people were on the start line, so it would have been easy to skip a minute. Easy to spot on the sprint but harder on the classic.

As I understand it the final check was (to have been) made in the minus one box thus verifying that people started on time. Unfortunately on the sprint day this didn't happen consistently.

Done properly it's fine.

A timed start adds that extra bit of tension to the event.

Now if only the rules for a 2 day event would be altered so that you could choose which day to run early and which to run late. I don't think we should be allowed 2 late starts and can see virtually no practical need for anyone to require it.

On a similar vein I hope that at the Welsh this year they are stricter with the start times than the last time. Otherwise what is the point of allocating starts in 6 separate start blocks?
