Blimey Wendy there's enough evidence in your photos to disqualify a 'shed load' of competitors for crossing uncrossable walls. Wonder if anything will be done to stamp this out?

One of the most obvious looking examples is control 110.
Which is clearly not an uncrossable wall, so it was legitimate to jump or reach over it.

The grey was much darker than that on the printed copy I had, anyone know why? graeme?

I thought that too - Graeme said it wasnt anything other than printing vagaries. I thought they were well mapped and with hindsight the difference between crossable and uncrossable is clear enough. It is much easier to see on Paul's electronic version though. Mind you the skatepark was pretty obvious and I still ended up on the wrong side of that!

I think the light grey crossable wall is one of the trickiest symbols as it takes up much more space than a kerb on the map but pretty much can mean the same thing.

It looks as if the maps were (laser-)printed with all colours set to transparent in the software: hence light-grey walls overlaid on beige paved area look like a much darker grey - having approached 110 from the south, I had to stop and squint at the map to assure myself that the wall was crossable. Similarly, the peculiar "green pit" to the north of 148 (#24 on Men's Elite) is presumably a blue wet pit symbol overlaid on the yellow. Even looking at the map now, I am still unsure as to what of the "dark green" is impassable green/black and what is passable dark green overlaid on yellow.

But it's a minor grumble against what was an excellent course on an excellent map. I think particular kudos should go to the mapper for taking the time to break the contour lines where they cross narrow alleyways at right-angles

I'm not an expert on printing. The actual map as sent to the printer uses 50% black, 0.35mm as per ISSOM (c/f 100%, 0.4mm for crossable). The building grey is paler than usual, to make the numbers stand out, which maybe makes the walls look dark in comparison.
Like andy, I don't think the crossable wall works too well. In early drafts I had used
519 Passable stone wall, (like the standard ISOM wall)
but unfortunately the map advisor pointed out it can be used only in non-urban areas. In places, I used "step or kerb line" for walls of 3-4 bricks high.
I spent about half the afternoon in the estate, and didn't see or hear of anyone crossing any uncrossable walls or hedges.

Thanks for noticing the contours Scott, it took ages doing that!

If you look at the legend, you'll see there's no uncrossable green/black except the hedges which are a lot darker (and in fact have fences in them as well). It is true that the green-on-white and green-on-yellow look a bit different.

I agree, the passable symbol isn't very good. It's to be used in urban areas, which means it is often bounded by yellow, olive green or shades of vegetation, and it's very difficult to see against all of these colours.

I've played around with symbols, and I find using the black line for passable fence, but without the tags can work quite well, especially when these walls have many corners and shapes that can't be shown with such a wide symbol

I should have said, the map extract I showed is a screen dump from the original Condes course file, not a scan of my map. I think Scott has the answer in that it's the transparency of some symbols that shouldn't be transparent.

I wasn't sure and decided not to spend time looking. It probably cost me around 20 seconds running round all the crossable walls - I should have spent the time to stop and look carefully

I too had difficulty with discerning the colour of walls (and I agree that the crossable wall symbol can be overwhelmed by surrounding colours). This was made worse in that the rain spatters on my glasses meant that I just couldn't see any detail clearly, so I too decided to not cross any walls or fences, just to be on the safe side. It wasn't until I stopped and was indoors that I could actually see what walls and fences were mapped as crossable or not. None of this is any reflection on the map or the planner - really super tricky course, greatly enjoyed it - just my own personal misfortune!

I had control 110 on my course (cp 3 on course 4) and checked map before leaning over 2ft high wall to punch control. Checked map again as couldn't fathom that such a low wall is marked as uncrossable. So I went round, whilst others were leaning over or jumping the wall, which demoralises you.
Since reading this thread and looking at the map again using a magnifying glass and in good light I still conclude that the wall is black enough on the map to be interpreted as uncrossable, same blackness as in the key.
So thinking this 2ft high wall as being uncrossable then assumption is that similar walls (e.g. at control 106) are also not to be crossed.

But looking at the map extract above and the map on route gadget it can be seen the wall at control 106 is grey and not black as it is on my map.
