What a great idea. Not really fundable by most clubs but this is the kind of thing that councils and such like might be willing to invest in.. has anyone ever suggested this in the uk? Does it exist?

Re: Permanent Courses
We've had pin punches snapped off on our newest permanent course - I guess it will be back to letters and numbers from now on!

Re: Permanent Courses
someone should try introducing this in the UK

We've got it in Gothenburg. The maps are 1:10000 scale orienteering map of the whole west side of the city, are massive but fold out as a leaflet format. Maps can be picked up for free at libraries, and other key locations in the city. They have lots of permanent markers with various degrees of difficulty. As far as I understand a few companies and the local/regional council sponsor these projects.

Re: Permanent Courses
The Fred Whitton, a 112 mile cyclo-sportive in the lakes, has permanent SI for people who want to do the challenge outwith the official race day.
Probably less of a problem with units getting vandalised when they are at the top of Kirkstone, Honnister, Whinlater, Hardknott and Wrynose.
However, could be used in the more remote forest areas. Would be good to have permanent SI out on the WOC Long and Middle courses after 2015.

Had exactly the same thought earlier although more at the sprint which would be much more non-orienteer friendly (as long as v well secured!)

I think that's the most sensible thing I've read on Nopesport in a very long time! Genius Mharky! If we want a legacy after WOC 2015 it's things like this that will make it work!

How long would an SI battery last if left alone in the forest?
Maybe Emit would be abetter bet as the batteries seem to last a fairly long time (Maroc still using original Emit kit bought about 10-12 years ago).

Set it to turn off after a few minutes and it'll last a very long time. The only reason the batteries last a shorter amount of time is because they are generally set to be on for 2/3/4 hours at a time

There is a group/website who have SI boxes on the South Devon Coast Path as well as other places. So can work.

Re: Permanent Courses
I am wondering if it would be possible to use QR codes - most smart phones read them. The QR Droid app captures the code and the time it was scanned and stores that in history. I guess that is similar for other smart phone apps. I am not so sure about how to send a list of QR codes to a website to produce results. Any ideas?
If this was possible then you have (virtually) zero cost controls in the forest with no batteries to replace and timing devices for participants that they already own.

We built a club entry system so you don't have to! racesignup.co.uk

The controls were left out after WOC 1976 Individual for the rest of us to run round the courses. Never been done since, as far as I know. Only self timing was allowed (because 'the press might get hold of a (probably apocryphal) quick time' we were told

The current batch of POC controls now being used by LEI include QR codes which currently link to the Club website. This may be further developed in future.

Trestles were left out after WOC 93 in Harriman. I ran it in 2002, most were still there, but the press weren't interested.
WOC 99 was rerun at a Purple Thistle a few years ago.
