I like the flexibility being offered as it allows individuals to define their search depending on where they live, or where they have a particular interest. It will also be useful for club webmasters and newsletter editors as they will be able to draw down filtered lists direct from BOF registered events to suit their particular club needs
You don't just have to nominate one myclub. If, for example two clubs regularly co-operate to run a league you can create a combined fixture list which has easy access to the details that have been registered. You can also define the level B and C level range to cross regional boundaries. You just tailor the parameters to suit your location. Unlike the BOF facilities which are driven by a postcode you don't need to find out the post code of the centre of your interest before you define your search. And you can define different levels of interest depending on how far you are prepared to travel.
Regional Fixture Secretaries had these facilities under the old ER1 based registration system ~ facilities that were lost when the new on-line registration system was introduced. BOF were asked by myself at the time to provide this flexibility ~ it's never been reintroduced.
Some sympathy with Paul's view that this is a contrived way of getting at OUR data. Perhaps in time the BOF RSS filters will be more sophisticated. But for now they haven't made any attempt to publicise that the fixtures RSS filter is even available .We have Paul to thank for putting us in the picture. I wouldn't hold my breath. I think BOF want to move on from Fixtures and provide some [ as yet to be announced ] new facility.
So thanks OO ~ a gap in our systems being plugged. looking forward to your URL generator for those who struggle to understand the technical side of things.

Re: Searching for events
This is an interesting filter ~ thought I might use it to create our Overseas holiday planner page on the EA website.
http://www.oevents.info/eventlist/?days=360&int=all&display=table
Well done to someone ( SOA ?) for recording where their event is to be held.
Who within BOF is responsible for registering informative information for the rest of the world ?
If nobody is charged with maintaining this information what is the reason for entering the registration on the BOF database ?
It's sad ~ if nobody from within BOF with the appropriate authorities is lined up with responsibilities for maintaing data and adding further high profile overseas events there is really little point in trying to use such skimpy information.
As things stand the MV fixture list is still the best source of international event information I know.

All the links take you to site that tells you something. For examplehttp://www.woc2012.ch/index.php

Re: Searching for events
Difficult to advise how best to get info on events in your area. i don't know where you live. You will find some club websites are informative, others less so
So I would start with BOF http://www.britishorienteering.org.uk/index.php?pg=80
Refine the search by entering your post code and the milage you are prepared to travel ( as the radius).
You can then start clicking the club , or any of the tabs on the events listed, to dig a bit further.
What we are seeking to do with this thread is develop a more sophisticated search facility so that you can be more focused in the way you find the events you want to know about in the future. But for now the BOF Events list is a good starting point.

Re: Searching for events
That looks great ~ nice and simple to use.
Only constrictive feedback I can offer is in regard to the return from the BOF event/activity record. You of course get there by clicking on the event name in the listing .
At the top of the BOF page you get the option to go back to listing. if you click on that you get directed to the BOF listing rather than your own version.
If you want to return to your listing you need to remember to return by clicking on the browser toolbar.
A minor grip ~ I just like to return to where I have come from as I may well want to look for details on another event I have listed.

This is looking really good - I can see this being my most-used tool for event searching! The only improvement I can think of is to pick up multi-day events (e.g. Croeso, Jubilee weekend) irrespective of level - but I don't know if the source data is there to allow you to do that.

How about putting a target="_blank" in the links so that they open in a new tab?
Thanks for all the effort that has gone into this!

Done - it was already so apart from the venue link to StreetMap. Clive's point is that the BOF page that the event name is linked to has a "Back to listing" link that takes you to the BOF listing no matter what your route choice to reach that page. This is outside of my control although I am considering "scraping" the BOF event details page - not yet though

I'm wondering how to include BAOC events that are in the Midlands.

Re: Searching for events
BAOC and RAFO (there may be others) are affiliated to more than one association. This does give this listing method a bit of a challenge which I need to think about. For now you could either show all events down to Level D for EMOA and WMOA or all events down to Level D for BAOC. You can do this by using the "associations and clubs listed here" option. The events would be included in your listing but you will probably end up with others showing that are not wanted.Adrian wrote:I'm wondering how to include BAOC events that are in the Midlands.

Nearly but not quite right. As a club, BAOC is associated to South Central and RAFO to EA. However, individual members are affiliated to a variety of associations depending on where they are posted, where they are from or where their permanent home is i.e. where they choose to be.
Long suffering girlfriend for instance has remained affiliated to the SOA whilst living in places as diverse as Bucks, Herts, Deepest West Wales, Yorkshire, Lisbon.... Her choice as a proud Scot is to be an SOA member of a Club affilitaed to EAOA.

I would be interested to know how she has managed to do this. When I choose "Join" on the BOF site, and then select a club, then the only association listed is the one that that club is linked to.
Stop talking, start running.

Re: Searching for events
I am not sure Haggis as my open club is my first club so I always remain SEOA.
Perhaps because she is only a member of the closed club and doesn't have an open club too - her membership card has SOA on it and SCORE arrives regularly. I will ask her whether she did something special.
Another example: I know that Little Geoff is RAFO/SCOA. Moreover, I also know from organising an SEOA prize giving that there are some clubs like HAVOC and SN who have members in 2 different associations (geography reasons) - so it must be possible.
This maybe something that can't be done on-line with the database we have now and requires manual intervention. LSG's membership definitely predates the revised membership database so may be just carries on as she renews by ddr.
