Trying to find out where there are permanent courses that my cousin can take her kids to (to give them a flavour before I take the 5 year old to a "proper" event). The first link that comes up is
http://www.britishorienteering.org.uk/page/pocs
- useful if you know the name of the area, if you want to look where they are not so much.
Does anyone know if there's a map that shows them, or is it a case of looking at club websites.
Cheers

Re: Permanent Courses
Not sure of the problem
the BOF site provides a search by post code and radius ~ you don't need to specify the club
You get a filtered list of all POC within ther radius you define.
If you click on one of the POC listed you should find a link to a Bing map which shows you where it is and it also tells you how to get a copy of the map.

Re: Permanent Courses
Well, that's strange.
I typed in my postcode (in Cumbria) and together with Beacon Fell, Whinlatter, Grizedale etc I was sent details for [b]Golders Hill Park![b] (London - in case you didn't know).
Is this really within the 50 mile radius I asked for?
Would it really take me only an hour to get to?
This won't give newcomers much faith in the BOF web page.

Re: Permanent Courses
Probably a simple data entry error by someone - I'm sure BOF (info@britishorienteering.org.uk) would be happy to be informed and to fix it.

Re: Permanent Courses
Almost certainly a data problem ~ have emailed LOK as the record is their map.
Just noticed the BOF also provide
http://www.britishorienteering.org.uk/page/poc_map
Would have thought this fits the bill perfectly

Re: Permanent Courses
bad data might be why Cutteslowe park has relocated to the Bay of Biscay, but doesn't explain why the system thinks the (correctly sited) pocs in Nornisland are nearer the north of Scotland than courses in say Glasgow or Edinburgh...
then again it doesn't actually define the units of the search radius: km? miles? brontosauruses? AU?

Re: Permanent Courses
I'd say that some of the courses in NE England e.g Druridge Bay (beautiful place) are actually nearer than those s well
Possibly the slowest Orienteer in the NE but maybe above average at 114kg

Re: Permanent Courses
I think there may be some bad data issues ~ could well be in regard to some missing, or ill formed post codes that have been recorded on the BOF record.
But the Northern Ireland issue seems to be more like a program bug. It seems to only happen with specific post codes such as KW10 6TG. Tried post codes in Edinburgh, Glasgow and Belfast and POC's seemed to display as and when expected.
So what's special about the Highlands ?
.. Have reported the problems to BOF.

the scenery.
but more relevant to the context, each postcode covers a far larger area (as others have already said).

Re: Permanent Courses
I agree ~ a stunning area
The problem seems to be limited to postcodes KW9 KW10 and KW11. Put in KW12 ( further north) or KW8 ( to the south) and the Northern irish POC's dont appear.
Have yet to fathom out what could be causing the logic to throw such a wobbly

This seems very wierd.
I tried looking up the postcode for one of the NI POCs coming up in the Scottish search (Gosford Forest Park, BT60 1UG) and doing the search centred on there to see if the same thing happened in reverse. At a radius of 50 or 100 it shows POCs in NI, but not Gosford Forest Park, but at a radius of 25 the map is of the Pacific.
My guess is that different location information is used for the search from that which is displayed.

On http://www.britishorienteering.org.uk/page/poc_map, 25 brontosauruses from OX2 picks up Shotover (Oxford), Coate Water (Swindon) and Cutteslowe Park (Biscay).

Re: Permanent Courses
Any significance in the fact that there is a Cutteslowe on the edge of Oxford (of wall / estate war fame)
