Can you imagine the headlines if we all used post codes in our sat navs and hundreds of us went piling up some deadend and got jammed for miles - considering we're all meant to be expert navigators - it doesn't bear thinking about

Trouble is we could between us draw up a long list of things we would like resolved ~ but BOF want to move on.

I suspect one thing that is motivating and driving forward the new Membership and Levy proposal is that they plan to redevelop the membership recording systems next year. This some may remember was the first part of the "new " system that was delivered and as we know only too well there have been problems regarding the issue of membership cards. So the move to simplify will I guess be followed by a need to revise (or replace) the parts of the system that don't seem to be working very well.

Exactly right KP, something else I have been assured was on the list for "future" updates.

Just to add grist to the mill I have just been asked for a postcode to locate one of our events on a local events listing site (fortunately in theis case -Sunday at Blagdon nr Stannington) there is one NE13 6DE (does this come out of my blatant plug quota?)

I may be ignorant, but I have no idea how to obtain a postcode for a piece of land. However as an orienteer I can read a map and can easily look up a grid reference. I guess that when I have registered an event it will have been one that appeared in the North Sea as I never added a postcode.

No doubt the answer is somewhere in this thread, but how do others like me have any clue as to what the postcode is in rural Highland?

Type in the grid reference where it states enter postcode !

Once it displays the streetmap map scroll down to the bottom of the map and click

Click here to convert coordinates


You get a panel that gives you the nearest post code. Register this in the Event record. Then those who use the BOF search by postcode & radius will locate the event on their screen. With luck your event will be relocated on-shore !

As I said in an earlier post a bit of a fiddle but it seems to work

Why not ask BOF to designate a code number to each individual tree in the forest & use that? This would be a good use of their time!

There is an extra step..

Once you have the nearest post code , validate it by entering it back into streetmap and seeing where it goes, then decide what you will have to do if you want anyone to find the event.

If you have to give a postcode, it be worth trying for a point from which the event can be signposted as an alternative.

so why not read the thread and find out?

I find the postcode by using trial and error. Type the road into Google, find a link that gives the postcode of that road. Then check the postcode in Google Maps, if necessary trying out a few other possibilities. e.g. if Google gives me AB22 4RT, try AB22 4RS, AB22 4RV, and so on. Usually there's a farm near the event assembly. Once the postcode has been found, next time there's an event on that area, just look back at the details from the previous event.

Well Greywolf the posts following mine prove that it is not straigtforward. How many organisers etc will have read this thread, and indeed found the relevent bits out of all these pages.

3 answers to my admission of ignorance and a certain amount of variation there. How BOF expect everyone to be able to enter a postcode beats me

Sorry to gang up on you Eddie, but the User Guide for registering events that is available from the menu when you are logged in goes through the whole process and tells you about using streetmap to convert grid refs. to postcodes, it's on page 5.

But I agree with the general view that the process isn't ideal. On my websites I give people a Google map and they can then drag it around and place a pin in the map, this then stores the location as lat/lon and is used to generate links to online map services.
