New BOF Competition Rules H:

"All members of a team (except for those in an Ad Hoc class) shall be members of the same club, except in the JK Trophy and Women’s Trophy classes where the UK Relay League Neighbouring Clubs Alliances guideline applies. For British teams this is as shown on their current British Orienteering membership card."

Now, I haven't inspected everyone's BOF cards, but I think uni clubs will be toiling.

The rules clearly stated that you were eligible to run for 1 open and 1 closed club. Then BOF printed new membership cards ONLY printing one of the members' clubs thus, presumably in their mind, altering the rules without them going through any formal changes.

A number of people didn't take this seriously and several people have run (correctly in my view) both for their membership card club, and for their other properly joined club

Someone at BOF seems to want to stop this without it ever having gone through the committee that oversees the rules.

I went through this with BOF a while ago as at the time I was chairman of both my open and closed clubs and my closed club membership disappeared. When i queried why I was told BOF had upgraded their membership database and during the upgrade lost the ability to record membership of more than 1 club but would add this requirement to the list of improvements required in furture iterations of the "upgraded" data base. I have sent an email to Mike H, reminding him of the previous correspondence and asking that this well-meaning but poorly thoughtout amendment to the rules is revoked and that JK and BOC Organisers are asked to apply common sense not the new rule as it stands.

This is of course the useage of the word upgrade in a context with which i was previously unfamiliar!

It's not a new rule and has been in place since the days when the membership system could cope with both open and closed club membership. It was rightly ignored last year and will be this.

I am hoping that it is just an oversight and not an attempt to abolish closed clubs (especially the Student ones) - I have mentioned the Uni clubs in my note to BOF not just odd closed clubs like mine.

PS if SN had been subject to this rule before the compassport cup round they would have been in lots of trouble. And this is not a dig at SN by the way as many of their closed club members who have SN as a 2nd club are mates of mine and are, quite legitimately, members of a closed and an open club - it is a dig at a silly rule which hasn't been properly thought through: the law of unintended consequences strikes again!

Guess what I'll be doing if they try to enforce this... only question is which country to go for! Hopefully common sense (and their own membership rules) will prevail. I just hope I'm not supposed to run in the age class stated on my current British Orienteering membership card as well, it's bad enough being trounced by people my own age!

This suggests a conspiracy. More likely just ignorance, and one of the problems of not having orienteers involved with BOF's adminstration and the design of the new membership database.
