For Big Moor on Sunday we will review the situation on Saturday evening. We will have most of the controls out by the end of this afternoon. If we need to postpone the final decision until the morning you will be able to phone 01433 630467 for a recorded message giving a final update (Big Moor only), but please don't phone between 22:30 and 07:00 as the organiser will need some sleep.

Re: Big Moor
Snowing persistently here in Derbyshire,(4pm) so wouldnt fancy being the control putter-outers today.
Also, I am sure there was already lying snow on the moor already.
Certainly be wet/snowy underfoot, and very cold, though forecast to be sunny on the day.

Snowing steadily in Lancashire - a few inches already I'd guess. I won't be travelling over to the NN Champs this eve even if they are still on
Doesn't seen a sensible journey from where I'm sitting.

Re: Big Moor
Doesnt sound advisable to suggest people travel then - so would we get a refund? or void the courses/event?

Have you bothered to read the final details?
Cancellation
If you think there is a possibility of cancellation please check the SYO and British Orienteering web sites or contact the Organiser. In the event of bad weather, we expectto make a final decision by 6pm on Friday Feb 3rd. In the event of cancellation SYO reserves the right to retain all or part of the entry fee to cover the costs incurred. We
anticipate that the event would be rearranged for a future date in which case competitors
would be offered free entry.

Re: Big Moor
but what about due to bad travelling conditions over the Pennines it would be not feasible to travel - even if the event goes ahead? do they get a refund?

Oh heck! Sorry I mentioned it now!!
MY personal decision not to travel. Others may go across from the West and find it's fine especially via the M62.
Others will be travelling from different directions......could be fine for them.

Re: Big Moor
Received via Fabian4 :
This is a message from the Organiser at 6:00pm Saturday.
There is about an inch of snow here at the moment and it's still snowing. If there isn't too much more snow we still hope to go ahead with the event but in any case we are delaying Start Times by 1.5 hours i.e. first start at 12:00 noon. This is to allow more time for competitors to get here, for us to clear the roads and hopefully for the sun to melt the snow as forecast. If the event has to be cancelled we will contact you as soon as we can but it might be first thing tomorrow morning. I will leave a message on my home phone 01433 630467 or via Fabian. Please don't call after 10:30pm or before 7:00am.

Re: Big Moor
Us southererns had to make decisions as to whether to travel today. A change of start time does not help- a 4 hour journey is beyond reason.

Re: Big Moor
With my crystal ball out last week we decided not to enter as weather is frequently bad in early February, and on open exposed moorland is always going to be iffy. If we had entered, and there was huge pressure due to selection race, we to would have left by now despite shift in start time it would need to have been an overnighter. 2pm is quite late for last start re safety! Good luck!!!

Re: Big Moor
Hi, everyone
I'm the Controller for Big Moor. It's a tough call. We've been putting out controls all day, the assembly has been sorted and it's still snowing!
If the weather is as predicted it will be a lovely day up there tomorrow, which is our problem. If we can park ok - and the Organiser has a willing band of helpers to clear the road there - then it will be a walk to the Start but worth it.
We've decided that those not seeded can run when they want. It's up to the selection races what they do.
We've also had a problem finding anyone who can add to the SYO website ...
I'm speaking to the Planner at 8.00 am tomorrow morning and probably the Organiser (several times) again this evening.
Our aim is to go ahead if we can.
Sorry we can't be more definite - and before you criticise, just put yourself in our position.

Re: Big Moor
Sorry, folks - we've got to cancel.
The area would be cracking - though not necessarily fair with all the tracking - but parking on a steep field is too problematic.
Now we've just got to collect everything in again ...

Re: Big Moor
Commiserations Ranald. So much effort on the part of SYO thwarted by the weather. Hope you can find another date to host this event. Missed the event two years ago through injury - was looking forward to being on the area this time.
