Re: Edinburgh University Orienteering Club
Great weekend up in Edinburgh. Really enjoyed the urban race - just a shame I completely messed up the final control in Pollock Halls! The sun was as much a challenge as the course on Arthur's seat
Many thanks to all at EUOC.

Mharky went round ( not running ) with the Uni video, on Saturday. He's editing the footage before posting it.

Apart from The Meadows, a bit of Holyrood Park and the finish I was never off paths or road! Anyway, the next thing I knew I was arriving at my control 27 without having (I thought) visited 26. A quick panic, followed by an even quicker visit to 26, and I went on to finish the course. When I got my results it looks as though I had visited, and punched, 26, then punched it again a few minutes later!
Alan - did you cross through the hedge around 26? Its mapped as black green - which is the same of uncrossable as a thick black line (although less visible on the map)
Sorry, I should have said when I was coming away from control 130 (25 on course b). I can only assume the person didn't notice some of the very small paths that criss-cross the olive green.
As for the hedge, I have an inbuilt aversion to going through anyone's hedge - I'm a postie so I'm sure I fear getting shouted at by an irate customer! And, after coming so close to finishing my '50 events for 50 years' I'm gonna make sure that I don't get disqualified - especially after running a cold and windy Edinburgh!

Re: Edinburgh University Orienteering Club
Enjoyed the weekend but my wife was very disappointed with the E course on the Saturday. EUOC seemed to make the same mistake as LOG in their 2010 Lincoln race,
veteran ladies don't want to run on relatively simple junior courses. Whilst their stamina might diminish they still want a course with navigational challenges - Edinburgh's a long way to come for just over 11minutes running on a course with virtually no route choice!
It would have been better to use the main start and say, use the first 5 controls on D course, an extra control or two to get them over Nicholson Street & Pleasance
then they could done D course's last eight controls - it would have been more challenging

I totally agree, a few esoc members voiced a similar opinion on the day too...

According to winsplits http://www.obasen.nu/winsplits/online/e ... tegoryId=9

OK - I'll concede they all made errors - still doesn't address the ridiculously short length!

That's not the point!
The point is that the course should be fit for purpose. The suggestion is that the same course is not appropriate for both under 16s and ultra vets.
U 16s are limited in scope because of road crossing rules. Ultravets do not share the same limitations. Therefore there is no justification in my view to assign the same course to both.
[Edited to correct vet terminology Super vs ultra vet. Ultra is the correct terminology. ]

Re: Edinburgh University Orienteering Club
RouteGadget for Sunday is finally up and ready for your input.
For Blue/Short and Brown/Long it was necessary to separate out the Micr-O section and create a new "event". In the main event you will see the route go straight from 117 to 102 and the animation will look as if you were crawling that bit (I know I was on my hands and knees on some of the steep sections, but that is another story).
There was an error positioning control 11 on Saturday's course A on the RouteGadget map.
You will have to draw your route to where the control really was and then over the olive green to where it is marked. We promise not to disqualify you.

Does anyone know if the Oleg's webcam video is available for viewing anywhere?
