The call for nominations for people to sit on the new Events Committee went out to Associations last week, and the deadline for nominations is 8th January - if you want to be involved, get in touch with your Association Chair/Secretary!

Unless the new ECC is going to cover all the areas covered by the old groups themselves then presumably some new standing sub-committees will need to be formed. The EC minutes suggest that these will be formed after the new ECC has been constituted. Thus anyone who feels that they have something to offer BOF in a specialist area does not know whether to stand for ECC or to wait and see what sub-committees are formed. I think it would be useful if some sort of strategy is published ahead of the Jan 8th deadline. I did send an e-mail requesting such clarification to the feedback e-mail address 3 weeks ago - if/when I get an acknowledgement/reply I can pass it on.

Perhaps there will be a FOCUS that explains what is going to happen and why the formation of ECC was really necessary.

BOF have become more and more inept in selling ideas to the Orienteering community when implementing change. The apparent decision to drop the Compassport branding without consultation is a case in point.

On the surface the constitution of the ECC looks as if it could be more representative of Associations which might help to get buyin to proposals from the grass roots. It is after all the clubs, working through Associations, who deliver the orienteering events programme.

But I am suspicious of the role of the executive ~ it seems that they retain the power to select Association nominees and slot in the folk they want to fill the remaining non-association members on the ECC committee. Not quite democracy in action.

And... they are clearly looking for folk who will not rock the boat and will endorse "cabinet" decisions .

1. Make informed decisions on a variety of matters using my relevant knowledge and experience of orienteering and of British Orienteering.
2. Be committed to the vision and aims of British Orienteering and the delivery of the strategic plan for the development of orienteering.
3. Be objective and place personal views aside.
4. Form and maintain good working relationships within and outside the committee.
5. Be able to work toward consensus and be accepting of ‘cabinet’ decision.
6. Understand the role of the committee and its relationship with the Board and Senior Management team of British Orienteering.

8. Be available to attend two meetings per year on Saturdays (dates agreed in advance) and the induction session and any training days as agreed with the Chair.
9. Be able and willing to communicate between meetings using email or conference call; committee members should normally be able to respond to email communications within 48 hours.

But time will tell..... The ECC has a good Chairman.... fingers crossed.

Yes, it met last weekend, and minutes will be on the website very soon.

That maybe the case Scott - but the committees you mention don't exactly have a major impact on everyday orienteering events - do they?

And the reply came within a couple of hours of posting on Nopesport!

As expected a bit vague but giving the impression that the ECC will take an overall stategic overview of our events and competitons, and as we know from the publicity should contain a mix of people with different interests and demographics.

However it is believed that much of the technical material will be delegated to smaller groups that may well be chosen by expertise rather than geographic or other criteria. These groups may be transient or standing. Those with a specialist interest may well feel therefore that it might be better to not stand for ECC but to make your interest known to the committee once it has been formed.
