I see from the entry invitation sent to clubs for next year's event that it has been renamed the "British Club Championships 2012 – The Compass Sport Cup".
I can well understand how and why sports organisations agree to have a commercial organisation's name on their competitions when it is in exchange for a large amount of money (Barclays and Heineken spring to mind, amongst many others), but I am a firm believer in the principle of "if is ain't bust don't fix it", unless there are stromg reasons for doing so. Does that apply here ?
The new name seems rather a mouth-full, and if the hidden agenda is a hope / expectation that it will get shortened, why is it not the "British Orienteering Club Championships" ? "Just "British Club Championships" could be anything.
There has been much debate on Nopesport about what the sport is called and if/how it presents the right image to newcomers. To me "CompassSport" seems quite appropriate - in addition to being a cracking magazine.
What do others think ?

Re: CompassSport Cup/Trophy RIP ?
I'm glad you raised that KP.
As I understand it the trophies and prizes come from CompassSport Magazine which I believe originated the competition a long time ago. These are presented annually by the Editor and the ties are co-ordinated by Pete Guillaume. I do not think BOF have any direct involvement with the organising of the competition over and above standards imposed on any event.
I also believe that neither of the above people were consulted about this apparent name change which seems rather rude to say the least.
Not being prone to saying the least I'd say it is completely out of order and way beyond BOF's remit.

Well in a related way BOF refused to add the name CompassPoint to the UK Masters Cup despite the fact that it was agreed by the committee concerned

... but is severely degraded in terms of relevance / importance / profile. In fact, in this instance the name seems to be about all that remains of the original concept.

I don't see what everyone is getting "their knickers in a twist" about. The name change is in many ways an advantage when it comes to promoting the event to relative newcomers and to the outside world. Doubtless on this forum and for those of us in the know it will still get referred to as the "CompassSport Cup." For everyone else the addition of "British Club Championship" explains exactly what it is all about and gives it added importance. A win win situation.

Well it's a bit of a slap in the face for the people who have sponsored it all these year - do you expect them to go on doing so?

It is also the first step in BOF selling the right to name the event to the highest bidder. Don't be surprised if in a few years time it is no longer called the CompassSport Cup, and the cup itself is assigned to the dustbin.

If it is true that BOF are changing the name of the competiton without consultation and agreement of the still extant publication that initiated the event and the current co-ordinator then this is a disgrace and BOF must withdraw forthwith - however are we really aware of the facts here ?
