just a thought, but if they added Headlamps and had, say, a mapped course with coded controls that had to be followed in a given order, then instead of celebrating the Olympics with a publicity stunt, we could be talking about Edinburgh hosting the Olympic Night-O finals

I think they have a cheek charging runners if they're meant to be part of a light "display".
Agree a night o would have been more fun,and they could have "choreographed" an easy course for nonorienteers if they didn't want random dots. If they plan to charge the 800 audience members each night and all the runners they'll make loads of money.

A few years the annual mid-winter night run up Morven (hill in Deeside) attracted about 30 people. The landowner demanded to know what the "race" was - apparently there was a trail of light up the hill that even his gamie was able to spot and tell him about!

Myself and another ESOC member (and a HOC member! (I think)) took part in their initial testing a couple of months ago. They are doing, or have just done, more testing on the routes.
It proved incredibly difficult to get people to follow the correct routes and have the correct spacing between runners... a night-o for non-orienteers would not work I think they plan to have a set runner who knows the routes run at the front of each group every night and everyone else (didn't know they had to pay!) will follow their assigned group leader. It could be pretty cool to watch... Based on the bit of Arthur's Seat between Hunters Bog and Salisbury Crags with people watching from the top of the 'Seat. It wasn't really my cup of tea but it could be good fun for anyone who's interested.
