Re: WMOC2012 Training
Someone may be able to correct me, but my understanding is that orienteering in Germany is very regional. Our family includes three sports teachers living not far from Frankfurt, who never come across it.
I believe there are three orienteering regions. Dresden is near the Czech border and its best areas have massive granite rock formations. The other two regions are the Harz area and North-Rhine Westphalia in the north-west (the latter area participating in Interland). I’m not sure the terrain in the Dresden area is comparable to Harz 200km distant. With djm being the IOF advisor for WMOC 2012, I think I’d take his advice.
Does anybody know why orienteering in Germany is like this? Dresden is former East, NRW and the western Harz former West.

There used to be a thriving region round Simmerath in the Eifel region (did a 3 day event there years ago) and also round Deggendorf in Bavaria (we stopped at a small hotel near there on the way to the WMOC in Austria and when we mentioned where we going the owner knew all about orienteering
