I thought I'd have a look to see if the European Masters Games have managed to attract any significant numbers of orienteers.

However even the link from World of O only goes to the Games front page. From there all that I can find about the orienteering is "Terms and conditions of entry" and the dates on which some sortof event is/has happened.

No evidence of results/ terrain or indeed anything whatsoever.

This seems utterly typical of the Gamescentric organisation of previous masters games, although this seems a little bit extreme.

Augurs well for the World Masters games in the same country in 2 years time, an event which the Italian orienteers don't wih to put on anyway

Not many competitors and those are mostly Russians & Ukraines
only 71 starters in the sprint event!
Doesn't look good for WMOC2013

Well I hadn't managed to spot it - what a gamescentric way of displaying results - some mysterious points seem more important than times

M55, such a huge class has 4 runners with the times being

I seem to remember that Ravinous was thinking of going - I'm bet he's glad he didn't.

I note that in the long qualifiers only 3 starters in M55, only 2 finished, both with times over 2 hours on day 1

If the IOF bothered to look they'd see just how much we want the games

In the M55 Long there were even less - 3 finishers and one didn't count 'cos he mispunched on 1st qualifier!

Looks like most of them also tried the Trail O as well

Trying to extrapolate from the EMG, which has never had an official IOF Championships attached to it and which has never attracted a large orienteering field either, to what may or may not happen in 2013 seems to be a pretty illogical exercise ...

EMG is nowt compared to WMOC I took a trip to the first European Masters Championships in Kyiv in 2003 or 4. Very small entry of less than 100 persons... SOT & a few of Jen's Noggs made up the non-Ukraine entry.... but great time was had by all

Gross you are missing my point. The European Masters Games is quite different to the odd attempt to hold a European Masters O Champs.

The games are organised by a commercial body whose agenda is very far removed from anything that is compatible with a serious sporting body's championships.

The IOF insist that WMOC fit in with the WMG organisation on a 4 yearly basis with no gain for the competitors.

Last time in Australia the philosophy could not have been clearer as general astonishment was clear from several (often medal toting) people from other sports that we were actually taking this event as more than just a bit of give it a go fun.

As I remember canoeing was the only other sport that had somehow forced their World championships into the WMG with a corresponding unhappiness from some of those guys that I bumped into.

Hi there,
The EMG did not have many participants. Unfortunately, the EMG started pubblicity only at the end of April, thus it was difficult to attract many orienteers. The period was not good, either.

I think if I had nothing else to do I would have gone but various things like a knee operation got in the way.
The maps and the terrain look quite inviting and I can imagine the quality of the races themselves were good. I don't know what the costs were to register but I do remember not being able to see who/how many people were or were not entered on the website.
It was great to see Trail-O in there too. Surely if it didnt clash, it would have been good to do both.
Publicity for EMG Lugnano started already back at WMOC/WMG 2009 in Sydney as they had a stand there in the EXPO place. (Of course, the orienteers present might not have spotted it as many were queuing for hours to get accredited ) EMG stand also present at WMOC 2011 (which is way too late really) and I am pretty sure they would have been in Switzerland at WMOC 2010.
I contacted EMG about advertising in CompassSport last Xmas, saying that if you want anyone to come, EMG needed to advertise in CompassSport ASAP! They replied saying they had fwded my mail to their marketing dept and I never heard from them again.
Last EMG in Malmo had 225 competitors - so the future looks bleak!
What is sad is that somebody is going to a lot of trouble to put these events on and if you dont publicise early enough and get your timing right (a week earlier better for Brits (English!) maybe?) then you end up with a flop - and no Brits in attendance.
