So which is your favourite logo?
Events ( that I've actually been to) was the Royal Deeside 6 Days. I just thought being camped at the castle was such a treat and I've used that event as a template for everything I've tried to do since. The logo is a happy memory now

Re: Favourite logos
2005 was a bit different, but that is also a problem.
It doesn't fit in as wide a range of places as a square or circular logo does.
A logo design needs to take into account the many places it is used:
Website,
icons, publicity leaflets, stationary, car stickers, merchandise, clothing, signage, coasters Ocad map etc.
A simple two-colour design is likely to work well in all these uses. Take care with the 2 colours as well, think about what a whole website will look like based on those colours.
It will also be used in black/white or greyscale, so this should also be taken into account.
Simplicity is the key here, as the logo needs to work when it's only
100 pixels or 1000's.

I'm obviously biased, but the Oban 2011 logo fitted all those requirements.

The British Champs logo (this years, and next year) is based on a "keep it simple" philosophy! It also works against the requirements Paul has outlined.

Agreed, I really liked it. I also liked the Breadalbane 97 one a lot.

Re: Favourite logos
That was before my time AR and I can't find it - what was it like?
The O-ringen also seem to have a central logo and then something pertaining to the particular year/location so that is a possibility.
It's interesting that people don't seem to object to the fact that the logos frequently don't have anything to do with orienteering, I looked at pictures of logos on google and like some of the stylised running figures - particularly those - and here I must differ from Paul - with an attractive range of colours - red white and blue bores me rigid.
So should a good logo represent the sport or the place - or both?

Doesn't have to be red white and blue.
It's just that if you keep the number of colours down it's easier/cheaper to use in multiple places.
Gradients don't work well on some mediums.

Re: Favourite logos

Can I add my support to the feeling that orienteering event logos should have something to do with orienteering. (Sorry Paul, I felt that Oban2011 fell down on that one)

Re: Favourite logos
This year's Harvester Relays Logo Designed by Matt Evans (HOC), who also did the ShUOC banner as portfolio work (wrote 'our club banner' there but it's not 'my club' anymore
).

The Harvester logo is a new addition to this year’s event. It was designed by Matt Evans (ShUOC and HOC). The ‘H’ includes an orienteering flag and, if you look closely, you will see two simple human figures, with one tagging the other (so representing the relay).

I did like the "J2K" logo - playing on the Y2K publicity at the time.

Silly me then. I must be imagining the suggestion of a compass.

Re: Favourite logos
The 2011 design was a compass with the Lorne Galley in the centre.
From this page on the Oban website
The 6 days logos have always had the main element related to the local area:
2009 - Big tree country
2007 - Salmon from the Spey
2005 - Crathes Castle
2003 - Dolphins from the Moray Firth
2001 - Lochaber axes
1999 - Inverness Castle
1997 - Celtic carving
The Black Galley of Lorne is a much used emblem in heraldry - probably most famously in the Duke of Argyll’s Coat of Arms and now centred within the Oban 2011 logo
