Toilet basics - Portaloo hire
After a less than satisfactory experience with the loo hire company at Oban 2011 I wonder if anyone has any figures as to the number of portaloos (plus urinals?) one should hire per number of competitors? I worked on a figure produced by Derek Allison for Oban. Servicing/supply of loo roll was an issue too. Looking for recommendations for JK2012 at the moment - Scotloo seem to be the only ones on that patch. Managed that without any dreadful puns....

Re: Toilet basics - Portaloo hire
I used one portaloo/100 competitors with one urinal/200 competitors for a national/international event and that was adequate to avoid excessive queues. Needed 3 x as much loo role as the company provided though. Starts were both close and finish in Assembly field so no extra loos needed outwith Assembly..

Also (since the JK includes a relay) be aware that people arrive over a shorter period for relays than for individual events - and many want the facilities as soon as they arrive. So more loos needed per head for a relay than a 'normal' event.

Heilan Loos, based in Granton on Spey provided toilets for Adventure Race World Championships a few years ago. The logo is a Heilan Coo, of course.

Whatever you do, please don't take the figures from the first day at the ERDF races in France (alongside WOC in France this summer).
10 Portaloos for 3500 runners was cutting it a bit fine and left the surrounding forest very fertile as a result.
What was perhaps more unpleasant was the thought that this area was used for the competition later in the week....

I agree with Madmike. For the Classic I use the 1/100 plus 1/200 for urinals. The latter are more expensive but shorten the queues

I think one portaloo per competitor would suffice.

Not quite sure what the definition of a urinal is - is it one standing space. I complained to West Coast Loos at Oban about what they provided - especially Day 1, when it looked like a toilet on a dodgy building site and not an International Orienteering event

For our SoSOL event in February 2010 held at Newtyle Hill we had two portable toilets (for 200 participants) from RB Farquhar, Falkirk.

One of your predecessors prepared a guide for numbers of loos for events, used to be on the SOA website but seems to have been dropped. Scanned copy attached.
My own organising experience confirms that hire companies seem to underestimate the numbers of loo rolls needed for an Orienteering event, so certainly insist that they make provision for at least double their normal servicing quantity, and have some spares handy just in case.
