I believe the use of whistles by the orienteers who found the unconscious casualty.

I'm glad it all worked out well, but are you saying people stood around blowing whistles rather than going for help

Really Graeme - I thought you had rather more imagination than that First of all you need more than one person at the site of the casualty so that one can go and get help. I don't know whether a whistle was used at that point to summon an extra person after the casualty went down but I do know where it happened and I can confirm the tree cover was very thick and visibility was very poor. I do believe that the whistles were used to guide the returning help to the exact spot. I don't think this is a suitable case to split hairs and if it had not been for the prompt action of those around then someone who is still very poorly would certainly not be with us.

The people certainly did not just stand around blowing whistles - they saved his life.

Competitor friend at WR heard whistle SOS blasts, looked for source, ended up with others giving M to M and chest pumping - probably saved a life. Whistle definitely played a major positive role.

Well I usually carry one clipped to my pants or in a pocket, although I agree with Eddie and would not want to rely on it because I doubt it would be heard over too great a distance, and if I could blow a whistle I could also shout, and the air would be quite blue so guiding would be rescuers - or not?

BTW I do wish the casualty at WR a good recovery, and a to those who helped
