Hello,
Finally got round to entering my second mountain Marathon-- and I've picked a good one! The OMM this year is taking place 30-31 October in the area between Loch Tay and Loch Earn. I'm doing the C Course - Are there any other Nopers taking part?

Me too with a non-orienteer, who, as he is 27 years' younger (and more than a few ranks), is told very firmly to know that his place is behind me ... until the last half-hour or so, when he's allowed to pull me along. It worked last year - 4th on B - so we'll see how the Medium Score goes this year. One of these years he'll enter with his own partner, at least that's the idea.

usual trick - wait until the last 10 days before the event and find someone who needs a partner. Worked OK in 2009 (4th on B) and no so well in 2010 (30-summat on LS, but most enjoyable)

Ross (6 Day Coordinator) and myself (6 Day Assistant Coordinator) will be competing in the Medium Score and no doubt will be looking closely at all organisational aspects (fat chance). With a combined age of 100 I don't think we will be very high up in the overall results but might squeeze into the top half of the veterans.

last year I had a partner 19 years younger and 40 kg lighter - make him carry all the kit, you'll go faster!

"40 kg lighter" than me and he wouldn't be able to carry anything! The 'bigger' man carries his load in Helmand easier than the whippets ...

I'm also entered - I'm gearing up for the A course, following a couple of goes on the C course and one in the B (last year), plus a LAMM long score and doing OK in the Klets in this year's Saunders. I'll be with a first-time MM-er, but he is an experienced marathon and cross-country runner. We've already begun kit/food discussions; I've now got a 200g Terra Nova rucksack and a v light Montane waterproof and we've even tried out a Morrisons ready meal foil tray to cook on (10g compared to 100g for my usual mess tin) - hmmm... We'll probably also go for fuel blocks on foil as our 'stove' (has anyone had any nightmares when trying this?).
All in all, it's a bit like a holiday: planning for it is half of the fun!

I think the 40Kgs is a reference to how big Madmike is rather than how skinny his partner is

It could be a touch of inter forces rivalry perhaps

there is something in that Mrs H - different approaches between the Services - whilst cbg was carrying heavy loads around Helmand, I was carrying large trays of dunking donuts around a US Air Base

True Tatty, it would be more like 27kg difference this year if I ran with same partner
Only giving away 10 kg and 18 months this year

Carnage Head.
Solid fuel's surely old technology - I used to use them when I used to do these things. And we got a takeaway Chinese before, and used the trays as pans. The only problem with the solid fuel is if the weather's awful. You have to cook outside as the fumes are so toxic.
