WOC 2011 finals have been compelling viewing so far.
Starting with the sprint and Lundanes (Nor) quote ‘sprint = circus’. It nearly turned into a circus after the qualification races. 11+ dsq for running over olive green grass on way to final control and c. 50 dsq for crossing uncrossable wall! Frantic discussions resulted in all those dsq for the wall being re-instated as ‘there were too many involved’. Seems a bit hard on those who crossed the grass. The final itself was great fun.
The long finals were awesome. I followed events with live TV streaming & radio commentary, World of O blog, and GPS tracking all on one screen. Watching the best women orienteers getting massively lost on the way to the first control, including a former world champion who never found it (!), was fascinating. Only 3 women beat 90 mins and only Gueorgiou was under 110 mins. Now that’s what I call a classic race. I would be interested to hear what the GB runners thought of their race – have they recovered yet?!
I heartedly recommend that you tune in for the middle finals and relay if you can. World of O have also had a headcam runner going over the course afterwards with the GPS on a map (split screen). It is a great way to sample the terrain – try it.
PS – mixed sprint relay? There will have to be some massive improvements in planning & mapping if we are not to get a repeat of the qualification fiasco.

Oh yeah.
that's why I ran under the road on Graeme's map only to realise that I was in a tunnel a mile long
