Scottish 6 Days - Day 5

I'm pretty sure the only person who gets anywhere near 40mph on the road next Friday will be the bus driver when he has an empty road and is coming away from the assembly to pick up more passengers.

The rest of us will all be in a long queue of road users (cars and cyclists) all proceeding safely and steadily at whatever speed the slowest one is going at (quite probably 10-15mph). It's only 4km, so it'll take 10-15 minutes, which is fine.

Can't we just let the hard-working team of volunteers who are trying their best to put this event on for us get on with it?

Well said Spookster! No wonder fewer and fewer people are willing to put on the bigger events if this is the sort of abuse/criticism that gets thrown at them before anything's happened...

Fortunately on this particular day the people who made the decisions on transport arrangements are pretty thick skinned (that's the volunteers and myself). It will work, and most will be happy.
No pallets will be in the estuary- getting across really is childishly simple (if you are anything like the child I used to be)(or still am some say)

30mph is fast enough on ANY single track road!

The sort of comment that gets the cyclist lobby a bad name.

I have no idea whether 40mph is safe on this particular road, and neither have you.

But there are single-track roads where the visibility, both of other traffic and of animals potentially crossing the road, is good enough to permit 40mph.

you've been watching too many Ford adverts where the wonderful roadholding of the car enables the driver to merrily swing around the tractor emerging from a gate coz he was driving too fast to stop.

Life aint like that - vulnerable people and animals die!

Totally agree. I'm surprised by the unreasonable critism levied.
I'd be tempted to refund the vociferous few and ask them to take their custom elsewhere.

I'm also very grateful that they have managed to find a solution to the day 5 issue. May be "Blindasabat" could ensure that he has his name printed on his back for the week!

LostAgain - If you look at my posts on this subject, you will note that I started by congratulating the organising team on finding a solution tothe parking. My issue is soley concerned with the car centred thinking that cars should be allowed to be driven as fast as possible and that slower moving vehicles are somehow seen as a 'problem'.

Meanwhile on a happier note. Ive been sitting outside at Mr Mckellors excellent campsite till 10pm in glorious sunshine admiring the stunning view. Still, warm and not a
Midge in sight. Steak dinner, wine, chocolate, I don't care what the week ahead holds. It doesn't get any better than this

It has been fantastic here this week - hope it's not all too early. Things are starting to happen - in quick succession today we put up marquees at the campsite, TrakMats arrived, portable showers came on a huge lorry, Tommy had his digger out doing access improvements for the Day 5 field and then the portaloos arrived. Enjoyed a gentle pedal along the sea shore to look at improvements for Day 1 including a new gate and the levelled off ramp. It's exciting! Just waiting for Goggi the Commentator to turn up from Austria via plane and bus.

I understand from a Callender resident that its the Callender Highland Games on Saturday afternoon and the town will be very busy - worth taking another route to Oban to avoid?

When we set off on our hols a week ago, we decided to bring 4 bikes with us specifically to deal with the "day 5 issue" and our split starts and 2 small kids. We've been laboriously loading and unloading them from the car each day ever since as we've been slowly meandering further N via various friends houses.

Wish we'd decided to bring a rubber dinghy instead now.

There are some great cycle trails around here and you will be really glad you brought the bikes! I have been using mine every day and it's a great way to travel around Oban

The cycle route is now complete from the Sea Life Centre (about 5 km north of Benderloch) almost to Duror. Some of it follows the route of the old Ballachulish railway and is outstanding. There are possible detours round Loch Creran (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/21033933/LochCreran.jpg) and North Shian on very quite and/or single track roads (practice for Day 5).
