Top Trumps - Infrastructure at Scottish 6 Day
Construction is starting next week on a 2 span, 16 metre long, 1.5 metre wide footbridge 2.5 metre above the River Lonan to allow safe access to and from the Day 4 area at Oban 2011. Can anyone top trump that for past orienteering events? Not possible without matched funding from the Argyll & The Islands LEADER Fund so many thanks to the EU!

Can you get an extra lane on the Connel Bridge?

Sadly no but we have been jumping through various hoops to try and help the situation!

I think WOC '76 had a large bridge across the Findhorn Gorge (courtesy of the army I think). O-Ringen has shut major dual carriageways for use as car-parks previously, does that count?
Norway 199-something large pontoon bridge across river form forest to assembly - at least 100m long.

I just love the way the Swedes throw up these structures - I've seen a pontoon bridge and one across a dual carriageway wide enough to drive a truck over constructed of 3 containers at each end in a pyramid shape with steel girders craned in and scaffolding poles as railings - health and safety here would have heart failure - imagine having that kind of clout

O-Ringen at gothenburg in 1990 closed one lane of the E6 motorway for all the orienteering coaches and had a bridge built over the road to get to Assesmbly.
That was a year with 20 000 + competitiors! Supersaint was number 2400 + .

At BOC 1982 in Derbyshire, a bridge was constructed over the Cromford Canal which allowed longer course runners to start in Crich Chase and cross this and an existing railway bridge before being given a 5 minute delay to cross the A6 and the River Derwent in order to pass through a wire-works to reach Shining Cliff Woods.
Can't remember the logistics of the 5 minute delay in these pre-electronic punching days.

O-Ringen, Borlange 1999. Mass travel to 4 of the days was by rail with the regular services being replaced by buses. A rail halt was built close to the Event centre/Camping which was several raised platforms lining up with the train doors. At least one other day had a similar rail halt built. At Gagnef (?) the O-area was cut in half by the rail line north of the station but the line was in-bounds during the event.
There was a footbridge across the North York Moors railway at an 80s JK at Newtondale but I can't remember if it was built specially for us.

That would be JK1987. The bridge was especially build using scaffolding. Apparently it was interesting to be on the bridge when the steam train went underneath!
