Re: Map of Chatsworth
DVO have lost all access to Chatsworth for orienteering due to a group using the area without permission using photocopied maps. If you do manage to obtain a map please do not attempt to use it for any orienteering-type activity on the estate.

don't worry, not for that, it won't be used for O at all. What a shame though, it's a brilliant area, hope they can get it back at some point.

Good luck.
How sad that the estate has to lash out at legitimate and responsible users in order to get their own back. Of course a stationary known target is always easy to hit. It also encourages clubs not to use route gadget which is a huge shame.
Many thanks to all you access "officers" out there. Your work must be very tough and frustrating, but you are vital to the sport. Cheers!

How sad that public access (in England
) is still restricted by arsehole land "owners"

I'm not sure why you bring RouteGadget into this. The quality/size of a screenshot would be rubish if printed.
It's photocopies/scans of actual maps that are the problem.
it's not just in England, there are plenty of restrictions of access in Scotland as well. Some other land users have rights as well, and if we don't respect them why should they respect us?
We have just negotiated access to an area that will have 2 stalkers with high power rifles culling deer in operation for several weeks. They have agreed some days that they will not work to allow us access. Even if you don't agree with culling deer, they have a legal right to do so and restricting access is allowed.

Re: Map of Chatsworth
IMHO there's a big difference between sensible, temporary restrictions for land management or environmental reasons, and a blanket, non-negotiable ban based on whim or spite.
IIRC the Cavendish fortune was largely acquired through corruption in high office and misappropriation of exchequer funds... perhaps it's time Chatsworth was reclaimed by the nation
And i do believe in deer culling, the only problem is the buggers (deliberately) don't cull enough, so the numbers (and damage) keep on rising...

Re: Map of Chatsworth
If anyone from the estate has set up a monitor on mentions of the organisation or family, can a reassure them that Greywolf is a thoughtless individual who like to be contentious with "humorous" posts; in this case with no thought of the possible consequences. He lives in the far north of Scotland and has no likelihood of orienteering in the area. I can't imagine the views he expresses being shared by any other orienteers (and possibly not even really believed by himself).

But screenshots are pretty irrelevant given how easy it is to find the underlying JPEG map images. Many clubs upload map images that are of a high enough resolution to print and use - probably not as good as actually having the OCAD file, and it takes a bit of fiddling to get the scale right for printing, but the resulting quality is often good enough - and there's nothing apart from honesty to stop people printing them off and using them without permission.

You can stop brown-nosing, PG; if they were that sensitive about where the money came from they'd've been editing Wikipedia

Re: Map of Chatsworth
You are correct in saying that many clubs upload an image of far too high a resolution for RouteGadget.
I provide guidance of the size of image to use but am aware that often people load an image over twice as big as necessary. The problem then is that it is hard to look at more than a few legs on screen at a time unless you zoom out a lot. Then the interpolation done to show less pixels than exist in the image can result in a very poor quality screen image.
So perhaps this might prompt clubs to be more careful when they upload a RG map and use a suitably sized image.
From the user guide
...a gif or jpg file of 100-200 dpi, higher resolutions will take longer to open and use more bandwidth. Ideally, use the export option in OCAD. You can edit these files with any photo editing software (Photoshop, Gimp etc). Aim for a file size of about 200-500KB, the dimensions should not be much larger than 1600x1600 pixels.

Re: Map of Chatsworth
Recent experience suggests that for a given dpi, GIFs give better results and smaller file-sizes than JPEGs; not surprising really because JPEGs are designed for many-hued photos. I had thought (led by either the 2009 user guide or the upload interface, can't recall which) that JPEG was the only option.
