I heard that springs were found in a pair of o-shoes to give extra power thus giving an unfair advantage

Having read the comments about the M50L protest on the web page Spookster links to , it looks to me that the protest has been handled correctly and (not having seen the written material) the right decision reached.
However I think that Martin might have been better to have referred it to the jury himself as he might have had a conflict of interest given the circumstances?

Valid question to be asked and an appropriate response (IMHO).

Why should Martin pay the fee for the Official Protest? It was up to Martin B to make it official by placing the "Bond" with the relevant authority for it to be made official. This he did and subsequently it was investigated appropriately.

It's fortunate that knowledge prior to 24 months is considered irrelevant, for if I remember rightly Martin B mapped Havethwaite (or parts of it) but Won the British Middle Champs on the same area by quite some margin.

I think it is reasonable for the organiser to pay the Jury fee out of the event funds to ensure that justice is seen to be done in these circumstances.

There is a difference between a complaint and a protest which needs to be explained here. Complaints are made to the organiser who then deals with them. Thus Martin Ward was the appropriate operson to deal with the original complaint.

The complainer, not being happy with the outcome of the complaint, then "upgraded" it to a protest (it's an appeal process) which was handled (correctly) by the jury. There used to be a fee of £5 at this stage but this was removed from the Rules a few years ago.

So, reading the explanation of what happened on the BOC website, all seems to have been handled correctly ... except for the fact that (pedants corner now follows) some out of date Rules seem to have been consulted, in that 3.1.2 refers to Level A and not Level 1 events in the 2011 version . The substance is identical however.

Just out of curiosity: was the map exchange on the Elite courses on Saturday just to stop people using the timed-out road crossing to plan ahead? A few of us were discussing afterwards and couldn't figure out any other reason why it was necessary.

Yes, I believe it was a requirement for the WRE status. Ideally all courses should have had the same. I used a few seconds planning ahead myself.

Re. M50L

There is a precedent. I recall (I hope) at the 1993 JK held on Longmoor, Neville Baker (TVOC) won M40L and was persuaded to be n/c as he was the race day organiser, despite not visiting the terrain other than the assesmbly area, and not being a local resident.

Thanks, that makes sense. I can understand why it wasn't done on all courses, though - I imagine the extra litho setup and printing costs if you doubled the number of maps needed for all the North start courses would have pushed up the entry fees a bit!

IIRC we had a map exchange on M35L at JK2007 after a timed out road crossing, so no reason why it can't be done (I suppose it was still a fairly limited number of courses involved).
