Weren't the roads around Borough Market marked as olive green on the London City race map?

Olive Green in an obviously public road at the City of London race last year caused me no end of confusion, during which I ran through the area I was supposed to be avoiding.

The problem with referring back to ISSOM for info on how to map busy roads is that it says explicitly "2.4 Traffic must be kept out of sprint orienteering areas" (I know that technically Filey wasn't a sprint...but here I think "sprint orienteering areas" means "areas mapped to ISSOM")

Having just completed a large urban (and non-urban) map i'm now getting to the nervous stage about its impending first competitive use...

my take on the 528 (olive green) vs 709 (vertical purple) issue was that the former is for areas that are "mapper-defined" as OOB on the basis that there is no public access on a permanent basis: private gardens, railway lines, flowerbeds in the parks, bowling greens etc etc, while the latter is intended for areas that the planner/controller define as OOB - because of event-specific conditions and permissions so for example my map includes 3 schools, various other parks, playing fields and a harbour area which all appear to be publicly acccessible but might for whatever reason (permissions, safety, other public events) be deemed OOB for a particular orienteering event on a specific day.

This also makes practical sense when the planner doesn't have OCAD, as s/he can draw the purple hatching in Condes

As for the Filey case I'm not sure either 528 or 709 would be appropriate (was the road really intended to be out of bounds?) - I'd have gone for a third option: 707 - the solid purple line indicating an uncrossable boundary - only a short length of line would be required to indicate that the road couldn't be crossed directly.

There is no need for olive green, purple hatching or any of the other things folk have come up with. The way to show an uncrossable fernce on an ISSOM map is to use the ISSOM symbol for an uncrossable fence (524) - at the correct ISSOM specified width (0.4mm). (ie not a black line that is a bit thicker than the kerb line it runs into).

A couple of things could be done to help clarity:
1. Don't draw kerb lines - that way the end of the fence is obvious. Kerbs don't add much to navigation when they are simply showing a narrow strip of pavement - especially at 1:5000.

2. Exaggerate the overall width of the road to allow space for the barriers and the spaces between them. (at 1:5000 each 0.4mm barrier equates to 2m on the ground and this needs to be put on the map in addition to the width allowed for pavements and carriageway).
