apparently Presbyopia (for that is what the damn thing is called) affects everyone to some extent as they get older - even short sighted people - which is a bit of a bummer isn't it?
It does indeed affect everyone, but some short sighted people have a far point at a convenient distance for map scrutiny (infinity for normal sighted people) and don't need a corrective lens for close vision. Such people are paradoxically advantaged for orienteering. I am such a person, and have the bottom section of my spectacles cut away (to my own specification); transformed my orienteering. Presbyopia is certainly not a bummer for me

Its made my contacts pretty much useless though! I now run in glasses which I can lift to see the map closer if I need to.

Re: Sprint map enlargement?
Cut away rimless spectacles give increased ventilation to the upper lens part which, when also treated with a fluid called Seadrops (designed for divers' masks), virtually eliminates misting. Backed up with a visor for raindrops, the system works a dream in practically any conditions

EddieH wrote:You are of course quite right that mappers tend to increase the detail as the survey scale increases and this point often gets missed by the movers for ever larger scales.
I've been thinking about this one, Eddie.
Consistency and minimising the need to exaggerate is the key, i.e., you tend to show to scale what you can show to scale at any given scale without clutter and obfuscation. However, it has been proved in recent years that, with an increase in scale, more detail can be shown, and, if it is accurate, clear and consistent with a minimum of exaggeration, fast and fluid orienteering can still be achieved. I used a 1:2500 scale for my Wheal Florence map and GG did sub-6-min ks - no problem. Specially built mazes at even larger scales show how that this principle can go even further.
The use of larger scales has increased the scope and variety of orienteering possible - bring it on!

No, you are not
You are supposed to be finding the feature, not the flag.
Would you like bigger features ?

If you could run forever ......

Presbyopia, huh? Desparately want to make a joke about it being the Scottish protestant churches' failure to see that constant schism weakened their influence but can't really really see anything funny in it and may offend someone anyway.
