what's with the edgy announcement on the BOF web site

. Both British Orienteering and the Scottish Orienteering Association are committed to the 2012 JK being staged in Scotland however we would like members to note that details regarding the Festival are not yet confirmed. Once these details are confirmed, hopefully in the next few weeks, a news item will be published. Until this has taken place it may be advisable not to make any early travel arrangements or bookings.

I was looking at the embargoed areas list yesterday and noticed that there were no specific areas listed for the JK 2012.
Given the amount of land available of high standard in Scotland I presume they are spoilt for choice around Perth (was the 6 days there last time?).
I'm sure that it will resolve quickly with Freefall (I assume) sorting out permissions

The 6-Day Company minutes mention Livingston (sprint) and Craig a'Barns and Dunalastair for the individual in 2012 - not sure if the position has changed since then?

The rumour going around the assembly area on Sunday was that SOA were refusing to sign the partnership agreement (a sort of contract between BOF and the organising club/region). No idea on whether there is any truth in this or not.

That's the last I heard. Easter is capercaillie season, and since this extremely rare bird seems to exist in all forests it's been hard to find areas. I'm not much involved - in a moment of genius, I offered to make the sprint map, which puts me in a conflict of interest situation with the organisation.

The last I heard was,

Day 1 Sprint - Livingston - Leading club INT
Day 2 Individual - Rannoch – Leading club FVO
Day 3 Individual - Craig a Barns – Leading club ESOC
Day 4 Relay - Newtyle Hill - Leading club TAY

However I believe Day 2 is now Dunalastair.

My understanding is as per smf. I think the capercaillie stopped use of Rannoch.

But would relocating from Rannoch to Dunalastair warrant warning people not to make travel and accommodation arrangements? They are pretty close together after all.

It would be such a shame if dunalistair is used instead of rannoch. rannoch was fabulous last year. i haven't been to dunalistair for years for a reason. It has always been dire...

Speaking in a slightly guarded tone I can confirm that the areas selected for JK2012 are likely to be:

Livingston (Sprint)
Dunalastair (new assembly area with some excellent runnable forest Day 2)
Craig a Barns and Kings Seat (day 3)
Newtyle (Day 4)

Event Centre (if there is one) Dunkeld.

Under the new system BOF is seeking formal agreements for "their" events with the Organising Bodies (in this case SOA). I (with my official rather than Nopesport hat on) am currently reviewing said formal agreement with the hope that it can be signed off and agreed very shortly. There are elements of the Agreement which one could say are a bit prescriptive but I am sure we can all pull together to make it work.

Dunalister is far from dire. It was used for the 6-day in August when the bracken was head high. All that brackeny area (most of the map) is super fast running. There is a fair sized detailed area in what was very young plantation. Several years on I don't really know what it is like but it will have changed a great deal.

I remember that 6 day in August! I was 14, first starter and significantly shorter than the bracken. I remember being out there a very, very long time.

I won my first (& only) Scottish champs there as a 12 year old, roll on a return!

Mmmm that partnership agreement is a bit of a funniocity isn't it? Doesn't look anything like I expected it to. I sort of fondly imagined that the BOF event managers would actually be taking on some of the key roles to take the heat off the organising clubs and region, not heaping demands on them - still I'm sure the "advice on best practise" will be much appreciated and worth every penny.

it looks rather reminiscient of the sort of "partnership" agreement offered by certain government agencies to voluntary sector organisations - entirely one sided...
Still, at least BOF let the organising association keep a third of the profit...
