Live GPS Tracking comes to Britain
Sheffield University Orienteering Club (ShUOC) invite you to an exciting weekend of racing on the 16th-17th July 2011. The Harvester Relays return to Ecclesall Woods and Limb Valley, the birthplace of the Harvester - a complex woodland in the suburbs of Sheffield. A middle distance race on the Saturday and an urban race on the Sunday add to what shall be a spectacular weekend of racing.
The event includes a UK first with Live GPS Tracking shown through the night for speactators both in the assembly area and at home.
Even if you’re not intending to run in the Harvesters why not come along for a summer weekend of high quality orienteering. With a Middle and Urban race and informal ultrasprint on the Saturday afternoon it promises to be an unmissable event.
Harvester entries are now open and individual entries for both days will open in May. A new Ad-Hoc class will be available this year for individuals unable to form club teams, see the website for more details.

I await the outcome with interest - we have booked GPS for Day 3 of the 6 Day in Oban too!

Re: Live GPS Tracking comes to Britain
For the benefit of punters like me, could someone explain how live GPS tracking at orienteering events works? At the Harvesters will it just be the elite teams or will everyone be tracked? How are the teams positions displayed? Is there going to be a giant map with different coloured dots like a giant route gadget? Or do we need to put an app on our iphones (the latter would be great as I can roll over and get extra sleep when the previous runner takes 30 minutes on control 2 - except that I haven't got an iphone
).

Re: Live GPS Tracking comes to Britain
This is an example of GPS tracking at an orienteering event:
http://www.tulospalvelu.fi/gps/SMNatt2011Herr/
If you select the watch in real time the event runs as if it were live, on the day of the harvesters this is what will happen.
At the Harvesters this will be projected in the event centre, however, to make the competition fair only some of the legs on an individual course will be projected (so that runners can not pre plan any route choices). The full course will be shown at home and then will be available after the event has finished.
The number of teams being tracked is very budget dependent. Currently we envision around 10 teams being tracked.
As for iPhones. I honestly have no idea, maybe somebody else can answer this question.

It sounds like you're streaming the tracking on a webpage, so you won't need an app, just a smartphone (iphone, android, etc). Not sure how you'll distinguish between the page people see at home, and the page viewable in the EC at the event?
Which tracking system are you using?

So us foreign teams can only see what you show at the event centre, but anyone who lives in Sheffield and fancies spending some of the night in the comfort of their own home...
Just saying....
