He was talking generically and saying you use the budget from your big events to buy kit to sustain your smaller events.

There comes a point, when upgrading technology that system n +1 may be incompatible with system n and in the interests of higher functionality for the future you have to forgo compatibility between the two systems (old & new) in order to advance.

The manufacturer of system n isn't "at it". They are just progressing the system (and running a business)

Indeed, and SportIdent are pretty good at explaining the benefits and disbenefits of each of their SI card versions on their website. They are not forcing you to upgrade, as you can still buy v6 cards that are fully compatible with all boxes.

And you can still buy battery packs for the older SI units, so they are not forcing clubs to replace those with v7 or v8 boxes.

Correct. They (SI UK, who don't actually manufacture the kit, that'd be the sportident based in Germany, though they are linked they are not the same company) offer a reduced upgrade price if you built the unit yourself (£20 per unit saved) and also a discount if you just purchase the upgraded box and trade in old (£10 per unit saved).

Andy didn't say that but it wasn't far off his intention. I've obviously been involved with the Scottish 6 Days for too long. (who do want to improve the clubs of those who put on their event) I'm actually quite saddened by the lack

Has anyone from the O community ever spoken to Sport Ident and asked them why there is this compatibility issue and cant they sort it.

I've heard the reason in the past but can't remember off the top of my head. Sometimes the benefits of producing new outweigh the hassle of trying to fudge in backwards compatibility.

I need to get me one of them 'views are my own' statements in my signature, I think.

This card only works with the newer 7/8 SI-Stations. All major events in the UK use the new style stations but a few clubs do still have the older stations which they use for low key/informal events. At these events you will need to be loaned an old SI-Card 5 to use.
