As madmike suggets I think you need to be consistent (on the map) but that doesnt necessarily mean all maps need to be the same.

Hi Mrs H,
I have gone from 94Kg to 83.7Kg so far, which is about 22 and 2/3 pounds so I am probably behind Mr H but only just.

Physioterrorist's magic, podiatry, lots of deep tissue massages and some good advice from a doctor who is genuinely interested in sports medicine have helped enormously with my wrecked body.

Now if we can sort out the stiff back, high blood pressure and high cholestrol I may even live to be a M55

We will have to bet 2 lettuce leafs and some grated carrot on who loses most unless I can find calorie free wine somewhere

Looks like this year's 14 stoner sprint at S6D will be deficient 2 competitors.

I seem to have been eating more than ever and according to my weightwatchers on line calculator I only have to go for 1 hour's jog to earn half a bottle of wine - got to be worth it

This will be the Havard Tveite who insists that the Trossachs must be printed at 15,000 rather than 10,000 - merely to satisfy a whim of the IOF mapping group rather than anything based on reality of eye-sight issues and legibility. IOF map group has disappeared up its own arse over the years and lost sight of what it was originally there for. It now peddles a messianic obsession with scale of map being the defining point of whether an area is suitable for world class events rather than the quality of the terrain.

Thanks all for the discussion. I think I'll probably go with leaving standard pavements off on this map for clarity - having tried it, I think it does look better without. I'll still include the bits where the pavement does something particularly interesting - such as odd little spurs at the side of parking bays (the area doesn't have any roundabouts or particularly complex junctions).

I'm working from a base map which has pavements on. I'm undecided about whether the final map should have all pavements or only a few.

To enable myself to put off the decision until I have seen the near-final map, and talked to the controller etc, I am prevaricating for the moment.

I have created a second 'pavement' symbol, very easy to do in OCAD, which has a different OCAD icon but is identical on the map. I shall map the pavements which are definitely going to be in the final version using the original icon, and those that I might suppress using the second. Then if I do decide to suppress, I can just use the OCAD 'hide symbol' command to make half the pavements disappear. If I leave them in, it won't be possible for the map user to tell which pavement is mapped with which icon.

This is almost no extra work for me, since my base has the pavements. If I was starting from scratch and needing to actually survey the pavements myself, I might take a different view.

Of course, I do need to make sure that I use the right icon for each pavement...

Good question, we certainly debated it for the Daresbury Laboratory map.

We originally put them in since many of our pavements were wide and many turned into footpaths, so it would have looked strange without them. We had also blown up to 1:2500. We kept them in for the 2008 (1:5000) and 2010 (1:4000) events. I don't believe their presence cluttered the map unduly, but it might have been clearer without them.

Ironically (IMO) for the British Trail-O Championships weekend we coloured all the pavements a different colour and made them OOB since their kerbs would have been tricky to climb for some types of wheelchair - so the competitors had to stay on the road!
