Re: Scottish Sprint Champs
Many events also say that they'll remove the split up to 1-minute, after that it's going on your time to stop people taking a big rest... manning it is the other option.

I did wonder that - or taking time to study the rest of the course in detail.

To be fair I think they did have a maximum time in the event I mentioned. It was also manned.

We are looking at a road crossing at JK2012 with this issue (joining two existing mapped areas into one bigger area). I (and the planner) are seeking advice on timed crossings and what is allowed at an event of this nature.

Re: Scottish Sprint Champs
Can I point out that it could take someone (particularly an older person) a significant time to cross a road (especially if it is busy) so the maximum time out needs to cover that. (on the other hand an Elite stopping for a Prima Donna Kebab - got that one in ahead of Nato's chairman but I'm still not insulting people who run faster than I think
-should lose time if they linger)

Possibly the slowest Orienteer in the NE but maybe above average at 114kg

Found it - Appendix E, Event Safety
"Where deemed necessary, busy roads may need controlled crossings with marshals
and/or timed-out controls".
Not sure what a reasonable time out is of course and how you actually control such a process to stop people having an unfair breather e.g. no traffic coming so go across the road but wait for a minute before continuing v traffic coming so forced to stop and have a breather.

Re: Scottish Sprint Champs
JK 2002 at Lydney Park had a time crossing. You had a minute's grace. In general most people run through anyway, not wanting to break their rhythm

Opinion is divided on this one. If people are not being allowed a breather on the other side they may take it before crossing. The fairest solution is to let everyone have their full allocation. There are potential problems with small groups forming but probably not that significant (unless Graeme has a mathematical model to prove otherwise).
Quite often there is a map exchange after the 2nd punch.

The second road crossing at BOC in Wales last time it was there was tight. I had time added onto my crossing

Yes - take a breather or take the opportunity to group up- interesting poser.
Wanted to add - make sure there is a notice (or person or both) actually at the timed out control - half the people wont have read or understpod the final details anyway.

I'd say the fairest isn't to let everyone have their full allocation but to force everyone take the same set amount of time, irrespective of how fast they cross.

Re: Scottish Sprint Champs
Looking at the splits it is clear that a few people ran through the open gate between 7 and 8 on course 2. However as the circle crosses the fence at that point it would be impossible to disqualify them as it was not their fault.
There are 2 people who difinitely must have punched through the fence at no 10. They should in my opinion be disqualified as they clearly did not complete the course regardless of whether they knew the rules or not.
Regarding the route near the open gate I never considered it because as Mharky says the map is drawn wrongly - I could not see there was a gap continuing around the outside - I can scarcely see it in good light in an armchair.

There was one at a railway crossing at Loch Vaa during the Scottish Six Days in 2003 and again at SOL6 in 2006.
