How long will that take Eddie - Mike's off until March 15th - the lead could change hands several times before then - it would be tragic to lead the league and never know it - must be someone else at BOF who can upload the results:?

A question - assume you are the best person to answer.
Looking at the comments from the controller of Twin peak day 1- clearly this middle distance event was initially expected to have much less interest but the Master cup boosted attendance (mine too I'll happily admit!).

If there is ongoing interest in the series, being "In" the masters cup could have signficant impact on events (potentially both positive -more entries - and negative -too many entries) . Can you enlighten on how events were chosen (or more importantly will be chosen) for the Masters cup going forward?

Do clubs need to nominate their event, or conversley could a club's event be "hijacked"?

Thanks for your very cryptic post Graeme. I spent some time trying to work out what had happened. Those not in the know will assume I've got it wrong.
However you could always try to win both M35 and M40.
Also I always intended to be flexible on the notification in advance rule. It is there to stop people loking at the results and deciding retrospectively which class they would be better off running. As the rules were only publshed as the competition started, and there are stil plenty of people who are unaware that it even exists I fell it only reasonable to let people change class when it is clearly not through trying to get a retrosective gain. Therefore if you would like to score in M35 instead I will move you.

Posting spreadsheets can be troublesome, even though Google Docs helped (previous Urban Leagues).

Although I see that the file has now been published, to address any future problems I could adapt my Urban League upload page for you in one of two ways: (1) simply let you store a PDF file (as used on the British Orienteering site -- do you convert it, or do they?) at a particular web address; (2) take your spreadsheet as CSV, read names and points, store to the database along with age-class. Option 2 would open the possibility of displaying the results of the different classes separately, analogously to e.g.

Events were selected by the senior competitions group: essentially the 4 different British Championships, the Area Championships and the JK went in pretty much automatically. After that it was a case of finding a range of events that gave a reasonable geographical and time ranges, a variety of formats (one of the objectives is to encourage them) and prospectively good standards. Organisers of selected events were then approached to ask if they wanted to be part of the cup.

How they will be chosen is a completely different matter. British Orienteering have, I understand, decided to go down the route of a National League: merging UK Cup, Masters Cup, and FCC, into one competition. How that will work, I've no idea beyond what has been published in the orienteering press, as Senior Competitions have not been consulted. Indeed, the Board appear to be wanting to reconstruct BOF committees and groups, so I have no idea who or what any consultation process will involve, if any. You may get more from a Board member. If they don't reconstruct, or the league doesn't go ahead (and nothing formal has yet emerged), then the Cup will be reviewed by the group in the autumn, so feedback will be very welcome! Some clubs/events have already expressed an interest in being involved next year.

If "Master Cup" status shows itself to have a significant positive effect on entries then there will need to be protection of the "Brand". "Run of the mill B events" shouldn't be considered, Homer is probably right, should there even be such a thing?

I'm not sure that the desire to have events spread across the entire geography of the UK is compatible with this.

Of course the inclusion of Urban & Sprint events will facilitate it to a certain extent, but would it be unreasonable for all these events to be in the geography with the weakest terrain?.

Interesting that this viewpoint has arisen, given that several of the current UKMC events were originally registered as Level C, and upgraded to Level B when asked to be UKMC events (senior competitions decided the event had to be level B as a minimum). I see absolutely no point in them having to be Level A (but then wasn't bothered when they might have been Level C, given that the criteria being used have no direct bearing on the quality of the competition - a bit like the targets politicians seem to be so fond of).

I know you were being deliberately provocative about "run of the mill" Level B. Whilst they shouldn't be, it's fairly obvious that some are going to be. However, I'd rather see the process being one of choosing UKMC events from already planned events rather than putting special UKMC events in, and then other events around them, a mistake that I think BO are in danger of walking right into with the proposed National League. (Not that I know whether they will, as there's been nothing about it yet).
