The BOF fixtures list is, I think, supposed to have a special category for long-O events, which should make answering your question simple. However, owing to the preference for using 'long' rather than 'classic' to describe the traditional event style, many events which are not long-O are in fact flagged up as 'long' in the fixtures.
Rant over, an attempt to answer your question (and I'm sure to have missed some):
June 5 ESOC
August 28 GO
September 4 CLOK
September 25 BOK
October 1 & 2 QO (2 days, as close to the Phoenix as you're likely to get)
November 27 SROC Tim Watkins
You might also want to look at the "Trail Challenge" races that SLOW and SAX do, although these are navigationally simple and not therefore proper long-O IMO.

If you want to do a long race requiring some navigation (not long O) then take a look at

for this years Surrey Hills Trail Challenge Race
30km over the hills and Trails of Surrey

Tayside often hold an event in summer in the Ochils; there's nothing listed yet.

They often wait until the ESOC date is confirmed to avoid a conflict. I believe there will be one this year.AlanB wrote:Tayside often hold an event in summer in the Ochils; there's nothing listed yet.

Thanks for the info guys, can I take it from the comment above that the Phoenix isn't going run this year?
No, I have no inside information on the Phoenix.
You mentioned the Phoenix, and I merely meant that this looks like a similar event.
There's an email address on http://www.newcastleorienteering.org.uk/phoenix/phoenix.html if you want to ask about the Phoenix.

Re: 2011 Long O Events
A bit of a long way off, but I think BAOC normally organise a long-O type event (combined with an MTBO event) somewhere in the south-east around Christmas each year.
It's also worth considering the Mountain Trial in September, which is registered as a fell race but usually involves a lot of mountain-marathon style navigation and routechoice.

Re: 2011 Long O Events
WCOC will be running the 2011 Copeland Chase in mid November..... not sure of the date. Three courses, 20, 15 and 10km. Last year it was in the Eastern Fells around Watermillock. 2011 it is returning to Loweswater area, its original home venue.
WCOC are also offering an M21E course (Black++) at their regional event at Eskdale Tarns in late March, Sunday 20th!! Should be an epic. The area includes, Eel, Stony and Burnmoor Tarns.

Re: 2011 Long O Events
The Phoenix is dead unfortunately. The organiser (me) has taken up the job with SOA in Scotland and the rest of the team wanted a new generation to take it on. That seems unlikely.
Fac et Spera. Views expressed are not necessarily those of the Scottish 6 Days Assistant Coordinator

That's a great shame. I really liked the event, although I only did it once (the 700 mile round trip being a bit much for a weekend).
I think the calendar could do with more events of this sort, from my perspective offering all the advantages of a mountain marathon without the hassle of lugging kit around. Perhaps one day it will rise from the ashes like, er, a Phoenix?

Re: 2011 Long O Events
With Colin (Freefall) away and the rest of the "standard" Phoenix team concentrating on the Northern Championships at the moment (26th & 27th March Day 1 in central Newcastle; Day 2 at Ray Demense where Colin has his swansong as a Nato planner - end of plug) and given the low entry last year - I think we will have real difficulty raising any enthusiam for running the Phoenix this year.
Strong expressions of interest might "raise it from the ashes" at some future point I suppose.
BTB I'm not part of that team but they were "persuading" me to help as it "failed" last year........ (as I'm only a couple of years younger than Colin I can't be part of a "new generation" can I?)
Edit: thought I'd better give you a link to the Northern Champs [url][http://www.newcastleorienteering.org.uk/flyer/rdmx/home.html/url]

Possibly the slowest Orienteer in the NE but maybe above average at 114kg

Not sure this statement is fair. The event was pulled along time before the entry date closure. It certainly looked from the outside that the desired outcome of the cancellation of the event was achieved and "blamed" on low pre-entry levels way before closing date.
It is a shame as the Phoenix had been a nice family friendly event.
Capricorn? Is this also dead ?
