Brownsea Island

Due to the vision of a couple of members of Wessex OC 35 of us were given the opportunity to run on this magical place. Super event, although the orienteering, through nature of the terrain, was technically easy. However climb was certainly on the agenda On a beautiful spring day I ran in a short sleeved top, in brilliant sunshine. What more could we ask for - we had a boat ride, lovely walk across the island to the Assembly point, great indoor facilities and could even stay and do a night event. Thank you Wessex, especially Eric Whapples.

gosh Tatty that sounds fantastic a real pocket adventure - I would love to do an event like that. If anyone's got anything similarly of a quirky nature please let us know (in advance).

I would also have loved a chance to orienteer on Brownsea Island - any chance of a public event - which could be limited to a certain number of pre-entries if thats a requirement?
There are also many other areas/islands that would be great to use - the whole of Lundy Island, Holy Island/Lindisfarne...

Brownsea Island Inaugural!

I found out about this on a Wessex Night League flyer, so am assuming it's a night event, but can't find any further details yet. Definitely a date for the diary though

Holy Island has some amazing dunes, but I doubt very much if we will ever see them with a proper map in our hands.
There is of course a Kerrera map. Further afield in fantasy land, there are vast areas of good terrain on Harris. Not all rough, some good dune stuff over there.

A long way to go for me, but very tempting - I presume it's impossible to run off the map! Just wondering whether you have to take their transport, or are allowed to make your own way there (given last time I raced down there I circumnavigated Brownsea).

The night event is one of a series that we organise in the Dorset area and is happening on Saturday 5th March and organised by WSX
Plans are in hand for an event on Sunday 6th March and when finalised WSX will publish details
Last time was fantastic with peacocks to make noises at us from roosting perches in the trees and I am sure this time will be just as good

Shame we didn't have the odd £ 2m to spare - we could have bought Taransay.

[The other good suggestion for use of this island was as a permanent home for Ben (If there's a TV camera about I'll be there) Fogle, a good cause I'd contibute to].

Opposite Taransay there is some gobsmacking terrain of a similar nature - dunes giving way to slabby complex craggy hillsides.

The night event eluded to was for earlier this year. However we have another night event lined up for the evening of Monday 6 February 2012 if you can make it. Resurveyed map with some excellent detail and runability. Red squirels at night!!
