What is a Gallopen?
The Border Liners have a 'Cumbrian Gallopen' on Sun 19 Jun 2011. I have emailed the BL Secretary via the website, but am not sure the form is working as I've had no reply. I have searched on Google and there seem to be a variety of Gallopen events. I'm a novice - what is a Gallopen event please and are they open to people outside of the organising club (I'm SOS)?! Thanks, Jon

Re: What is a Gallopen?
JonB, Galoppen is an indivdual league series:
South East Galoppen Rules are:
The South-East Galoppen is an individual Galoppen competition for individuals affiliated to the SEOA. Like the South-East Club League. It takes place over the same events as the SE League but runs over a calendar year. Events that are part of the SE Galoppen should offer the following courses
Black
Brown
Short Brown
Blue
Short Blue
Green
Short Green
Light Green
Orange
Yellow
White
There is a separate competition for each course. The first member of a SEOA club on each course at each event gets 100 points, then second 99 points, and so on. An individual’s final league score is based on their best scores from a proportion of the number of events in the league. This proportion is shown below.
12 events – best 7 to score
11 events – best 6 to score
10 events – best 6 to score
9 events – best 5 to score
8 events – best 5 to score
7 events – best 4 to score
6 events – best 4 to score
At the end of the season certificates will be awarded to the top three male and top three female competitors on each colour. Note that these awards are not age dependent since the assumption is that competitors will choose a course based on ability.
Hope that helps

Re: What is a Gallopen?
Yes Mate open to all but they extract the eligible runners from the results.
For example: This year there has been one SE Galoppen so far. Gnitworp won the course I ran, A W40 was second and I was third. Gnitworp is from SCOA so gets no points in the SEOA Galoppen. The lady gets 100 points in the lady galoppen and i get 100 points in the male galoppen (even though I finished 3rd) and similar points are awaded on every course. 2nd ldy gets the 99 second man 99 etc etc.
So if you enter a Cunbrian Galoppen as a normal event and whoever calculates Galoppen points leaves you out when he extracts the results - if they use similar rules to us.

Re: What is a Gallopen?
A horse race - in Sweden. (or race track - not sure, but I know they like trotting, like in Mid Wales)
The name got picked up by the pioneers and used for regional leagues - the SW had a colour coded league called a gallopen, and then there was the Scottish one Scotlands Galloppen (note scandi genitive) which is now the O-League.
So they can be B C or D (Yawn!)

Jon B - if you're looking for Galloppen races nearer SOS land, WAOC have a series on summer Wednesday evening.

The Cumbrian Galoppen is run by the Cumbrian clubs, BL, WCOC, LOC, WAROC and BARRO. Last year's scores can be found on http://www.lakes-o.com and the 2011 plans are also there.

Re: What is a Gallopen?
We have a Gallopen in East Anglia, except that we now call it a the East Anglian League (EAL) rather than the East Anglian Gallopen (EAGAL) because no-one knew what a gallopen was......

There seems to be plenty concensus as to what one is, but very little concensus on how to spell it!

I always preferred to collect "Eagle" points rather than "Eel" ones.

Is there any consensus on how to spell concensus?

Re: What is a Gallopen?
I'd like to pretend it was a deliberate spelling mistake to provoke debate Alan but it wasn't. My orienteering wasn't very good this morning either, but at least I've learned something today.

Oh, you can wait years for an opportunity like that to come along. He shoots, he scores!
