Prices about the same as now then, compared with wages.

I remember having great difficulty in explaining to my pupils, while such anomolies existed, that you couldn't mix decimals and fractions in the same number.

Easy: 1.97½ is just two pounds less sixpence.

I think coloured O suits to your own (simple) design came in about 1980. I say that because Ken Broad of Ultrasport helped kit out the Royal Engineers (REOC) with Follow the Sapper on the back. I still have the tatty object somewhere...

The advert included a photograph of the 1970 British World Championships team. I recognise Carol McNeill in the middle of the front row and Geoff Peck immediately behind her, perhaps two of the greatest orienteers we ever had, but I don't know any of the others.

I'm fairly certain that they are:
Standing L to R: Tony Wale, Brian Bullen, Mike Wells-Cole, Brian Jamieson, Geoff Peck, Chris James, Doug Wood, Rod Tuck
Seated: Jenny Tennant, Hazel Hill, Carol McNeill, Sue Bone (later Harvey), Sue Banner (later Parkin).

A few names to conjure with when it comes to the history of British orienteering! I think Sue Parkin would certainly be on any short list of greatest British orienteers.

Have to admit, I had to double check on Hazel Hill. I only started orienteering that autumn (as a 12 year old), so, as she wasn't around later on, I only knew her from photos.

Thank you for that information, and also the same info from awk. I'm somewhat embarrassed not to recognise the very youthful figures of Tony Wale, Chris James and Sue Harvey.

Mike Wells-Cole, who tragically died early in 1976 after a training run following a bout of flu and was trying to build up fitness for the 1976 WOC in Scotland, achieved by far the best placing to date by a Brit - 18th. It was a big shame that he was denied another go at improving on this. I sure he would have.
