As part of the publicity for the Scottish 6 Days in Oban 2011 I've been looking at how to use the new advertising media of the web in addition to printed magazines etc.
Banner adverts like those to the right of this page are available on some sites and I would like some help with regards the popularity / effectiveness of some of the non-UK sites.
One I have looked at is OPN.no, this has a lot of adverts, and it would be helpful if someone that is a regular visitor to the site gave an opinion as to the value. Do you for example click on any of the links regularly?
It costs about £140 month for a small ad on the side.
Any suggestions for other sites you think are worth advertising on would be welcome.

Re: Advertising events on the web
We had a brief discussion about Facebook advertising last week. Not sure whether it is worth a paying for an advert or not, but it looks like there's already a fan page for Tay2009 - I would definitely update that, get people to invite more people to become fans etc.
Edit: Also, whoever is the administrator for that facebook fan page should maybe go to http://www.facebook.com/username/ and get a snappier URL for it (which is free).

I'm trying to track down who set it up.
I have a Facebook account but I don't use it. But even when I'm logged in there doesn't seem to be any way of finding/contacting the owner, am I missing something?

I think when you set one of these things up it is an entity in its own right. Have you tried liking it and then putting in a comment? That should go back to the person who set it up by email. Think thats the only way - other than checking with the 6 day people as it sounds like it might have been someone like Scotia

Yes, I think andypat is right. If you can figure out who set it up then you can ask them to make you an administrator of the page, which should allow you to make any updates etc.

Looks like you have managed to get it sorted - I really like the combined logo and map excerpt as profile photo

Re: Advertising events on the web
I've used fb advertising. I've got an ad running now in fact, though not for orienteering. The ad's been shown 100,000 times in the last 4 days, and it's been clicked on 50 times. That's cost me £20. I have advertised an O event - there were 70,000 views, 25 clicks, cost £4.
Of course it's difficult to assess the effectiveness (although it's clear that we're seeing the Slovenian event advert, so it's working from that point of view), but it's good that the ads can be targetted and that you can set spending limits per view, per click and per day. (By the way, set your spend per click much lower than what they suggest.)
