Newbie questions: Emit Splits report and GPS

On returning to orienteering after a break of almost 20 years I seem to have a lot of catching up to do - and not only fitness

Can anyone help with two questions?:

• What do the colours and symbols on an EMIT splits report mean (the ones shown in the Time Behind row as in http://www.bko.org.uk/files/2010/05/16/green_htm_21032.htm.
• What is the position with GPS - sorry, bad joke. Is the use of GPS OK during an O event?

I think the colours are to show how far behind the fastest person on that leg you were. On winsplits, it depends on the % ie winners time +25%, +50%, not sure how it works specifically for Emit.

Oh and by the way you dont need a forest any more for orienteering either - check out some of the urban events around the country!

Looking at that example, they're actually to do with your time behind (or ahead of) the time taken on that leg by the winner of the course - so some people have negative "times behind" (in red) where they were quicker on a given leg than the course winner. But I don't know what the criteria for green/purple/blue are.

GPS watches etc are banned in World Ranking Events, and in other events organised by the International Orienteering Federation (eg. the World Masters). At the moment you are still generally permitted to wear them at normal events in the UK to record your route so you can analyse it later (I think that policy is currently under review), but you are definitely not allowed to use them for any navigational purpose during the event.
