I think it was HMS Dyrad, which is at Southwick, a village about 5 miles north of Portsmouth

I think there already is an O-map of HMS Belfast - it was used at the Rat Race a few years ago.
No - we used the standard tourist map. Given the different levels, trying to O-map it in a single layer would be virtually impossible - you'd really have to provide separate maps for each deck as the tourist map does.
Was certainly a challenge working out how to move around between levels (given that's not completely straightforward), made rather easier by the fact we weren't allowed to run (hence emphasising how much of the challenge of urban O is trying to do things at speed). IIRC we were very close to another team in the overall at that point so the pressure was on.
BTW I knew where the guns were trained from watching QI.

Re: Sprint Championships - Gosport
So when / where will the details be available?
Is it really worth a 500 mile round trip for a 20 minute sprint?
Real multi-level events would be so cool, a-la Barbican London, or Grand Bazaar, Istanbul.

Dont know when the details will be available, but from the BAOC website, there is an urban event around Winchester on the Saturday, followed by the Sprint Champs on Sunday.
I can see Winchester being very similar to Cambridge with narrow lanes, river frontage, mostly traffic light, but with some elevation thrown in for good measure. Should be good.
HMS Sultan is a venue thats cropped up on the BAOC wed events for a number of years. Ive only ran there once and enjoyed it, though complexity tended to be provided by route choice rather than by navigation. It'll be interesting to see how they garner two distinct races into the area.
All in all, Id say an urban weekend not to be missed, and it'll be sunny on the south cost...

i've been tempted to 'map' our old library, four/5 levels of stacks (including the national fairground archive?!) and a couple of levels of study area. Much more fun than our new library!
alas I fear playing in there may be frowned upon, as the university Assassin's guild found out...

Re: Sprint Championships - Gosport
Before AWK gets too excited the format is the same as last year's age class sprint - ie two rounds with the cumulative time determining the placings. The flier currently suggests that there might be a qualifying/final format.
Next year of course you get (almost) full age classes and qualifying/finals. Very provisional details at:

"Worth Lodge
The middle distance championships will be based at Tulleys Farm which has many facilities including a tea room, farm shop and activities for younger children. A snippet of the Worth Lodge map is shown to the bottom right."
... clearly not the same Tully's farm as was the venue for the Harvester a few years ago.....

Have to say KP I'm mighty hacked off that the MADO final Mr H agreed to control has been brought forward to this weekend as I fancy the whole caboodle

The one I'm really, bitterly disappointed about is next year - the demise of a great event - possibly the best weekend package on the calendar - replaced by something considerably less attractive/exciting (not the rule writers' fault - more those who overruled the majority of specialist groups - including junior and senior competitions - and decided they knew better).
Actually, this year looks quite attractive, especially with the race in Winchester, even though the age class champs isn't really a sprint event (more a middle distance race with a break in the middle for lunch!) - but still looks fun. Whether we are able to travel that distance at that time of year is an issue we'll have to look at. More likely to do that than the long haul to Brighton next year though, given the changes, but will have to see how the calendar pans out.

Re: Sprint Championships - Gosport
I just looked at the event guideline to see what awk meant ..... why the cumulative time of 2 races to decide the sprint champ? Sorry but that's not how it should be, surely. Whoever decided that must be in the 'I need to get my money's worth' category of orienteer or group of orienteers. In my book it should be based on a final (of two races; the first being a qualifying round) or just 1 race (like at the JK).
Hope the chairman of the Senior Competition group is reading this!!! I may just email him.

This is just a one-off, for 2010 only. Next year, the package is much more attractive (awk and I have already agreed to disagree about this) and each age class will have a qualification round and a finals round. So, no need to mail anyone about it

Except of course they wont, because there wont be enough people. The majority of age classes will have a totally pointless first round which counts for nothing (except maybe the chance to have a good recce round the area), and a one-off final.
Coming soon

Re: Sprint Championships - Gosport
From the 2011 British Sprints Competition Rule (4.3.3):-
So the qualification race won't be pointless at all, even if there are small numbers in a class (NB if there are more than 35, then the best 18 go to the A Final. Only if there are fewer than 6 do all go through).
It would be nice to be talking this event up rather than down ...
If there are from 6 to 35 entrants, the number of qualifiers from each heat to the A-final shall be equal. They shall be split as equally as possible between an A-final and a B-final, with the A-final having at least half the total number of entrants.
